Hey Souvlaki,

where are some good record stores in Vancouver?

I'm not Souvlaki, but Scratch Records and Red Cat Records are good for new vinyl, Zulu Records has a great selection of used and new (but a bit pricey). Neptoon Records has an amazing selection of used vinyl but it's all overpriced.

cool. i am in town for the next few days. are any of them close to Yaletown?

Zulu and Scratch are both sorta close. Scratch is closer as it's actually in the downtown core, a bit east of Yaletown. Zulu is in Kits/Granville Island, on the main island just before the downtown peninsula. Both are very easy to get to. Maybe easier when the ground isn't blanketed in snow. Have fun in the snow.

turns out Scratch is only a short walk from my hotel.

nice.

Yeah Id say you nailed most of them.

Zulu is probably the most well-known and has one of the biggest selections in the city. It's on west 4th in Kitsilano.

as Heretix said, Scratch is in the downtown core, pretty close to Yaletowm. It's on Seymour st I believe.

Also downtown, on west hastings, are Beat Street and Sikora's...the former is great for hip hop, electronica and remix 12"s, the latter is purely classical.

Audiopile is on Commercial Drive and is awesome. Good selection, nice staff, and (a rarity) good trade-in value for your used wares.

Up in my neck of the woods (Main St), we have a wealth of good ones:

Dandelion Records - awesome selection of old psych, garage, and rare stuff. We're talking old Spacemen 3, Can, etc...stuff that's all but impossible to find here. I picked up MBV's Feed Me With Your Kiss EP there. But the rarity of the selection is reflected in the prices.

Red Cat Records - fantastic for new stuff, good selection of used, really cool staff and the cheapest ticket prices/service charges in the city.

Neptoon Records - staggering used selection, mediocre new...you have to dig through a lot of crap to find something at times, but there is occasionally you'll strike gold. Also sells a nice selection of concert posters and misc stuff.

There ya go. Good luck on your travels, hope you're enjoying the snow!

I haven't had a chance to go to Audiopile or Dandelion yet but I'm always meaning to. Red Cat and Scratch are probably my favourites, but yeah, Zulu has one of the best and most varied selections. Didn't even know about the two you mentioned on West Hastings.. hmm. Oh, yeah, and Scratch is on Richards St. at W Georgia

Scratch is just around the corner from the Vogue, which is perfect for me. will probably make my way there tomorrow sometime.

Yeah that is super convenient then. Even though it's not my favourite, if you can only hit one other, I'd probably recommend Zulu, simply because of its selection. If you're right by the vogue then you could also walk to the shops on West Hastings. On that note I forgot to mention Vinyl Records, which is about a block east of Beat Street. It's got a huge selection of used, but my god it's overpriced. They had a copy of the Rapture's Echoes going for like $50 when I snagged it for $10 at Red Cat....I don't know what their deal is. Anyways maybe worth a look if you're in the area.

Dandelion is quite impressive, pretty much every time I walk in I find something amazing, but as I said its on the pricey side, to say the least.

I feel pretty spoiled where I am though, literally a 5 min walk away from Dandelion and Neptoon, about 10 mins away from Red Cat... And as I was born in Toronto I can back that up, yes this is nothing compared to out east. But man a couple inches and the city shuts down.

I like how Zulu labels everything from a US label (even big ones like Matador for god's sake) as an IMPORT and uses that to justify charging at least $20 for a single LP... Yep, it must be really expensive to do that overseas shipping from the border that's a few miles away. Red Cat does the same thing but they don't jack up the price just because something is an import.

Found Katy Lied used at Reckless on Broadway...an underappreciated Steely Dan album IMO.

Wire - Object 47 with Read And Burn 03 EP 12"

The vinyl edition is fantastic. Earth-shattering bass on both disks. In fact, the EP is cut so loud my Stanton cartridge was having trouble tracking it - had to switch to my Audio-Technica cart.

I'll bet it won't be a problem. My Stanton cart - while wonderful sounding - has a very delicate suspension, which was likely the cause of the mis-tracking. (especially during the bass line on "Our Time" - the needle was nearly flying out of the groove).

Most entry-level carts track a bit heavier and have a more rugged suspension - which in this case would be a good thing.
