I think it was Aggy who was in a peformance orchestra. Anyone else play, trained or recreational? Beautiful instrument, really makes a song. I'm considering getting one and messing with it. If you don't know who Jacqueline du Pré is, do yourself a favor and find out.

There's this cello melody from Smog's "One Less Star" (off the Julius Caesar album) that Jens Lekman totally stole for the cello breakdown in "A Higher Power," and it rules always.

Damo Suzuki: So, um, yeah. Getting older isn't as bad as it sounds. Better than being young & poor (DjDrake) or young & slutty (SG) or young, poor and slutty (Paves); am I right?

Alright, my friends. It's time for another solid little rock jam

I love that it's such a physical instrument. More than a violin. It sits between your legs and you use your whole body to play it.

Is there even a more physical instrument?

If you listen to "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses" on headphones, there's the coolest cello part going on... it's especially apparent during the intro. Maybe not the best example, but it was the first that came to mind.

I played upright bass in a symphonic orchestra for several years, but I have always wanted to learn to play cello. It really is a beautiful instrument. Have you already started looking into buying one? I've thought about buying one, but they are expensive. The "inexpensive" ones are usually around a thousand bucks. And how about the bow...if you get a nice wood one (opposed to a crappy plastic one) there's another few hundred dollars. damn, I need a sugar daddy.

Red is right

My cousin is a pretty big-time orchestra cello dude. He also recorded with Jump Little Children, but I dunno if anyone gives a shit about them anymore.

I think I posted 'I Almost Had a Weakness' awhile back, good stuff. But this whole album is equally the other parts of the Brodsky Quartet.

PJ Harvey- 'Plants and Rags.' Avant- garde bitch.

This is lovely.

My personal favorite track featuring cello is this:
Agalloch - ". . . and the Great Cold Death of the Earth"

Sadly, the black metal vocals will be offputting to some. But the prominent cello & transition to distorted guitar riff from around 4:00 to 4:17 is sublime.

I am a senior in high school and have been playing cello since the fourth grade. It really is a beautiful instrument. I just got a nice, sleek, black electric cello for about 300 bucks on eBay. The quality isn't the best, but it's a decent instrument. As far as bands, Cursive has some good cello parts. Though Gretta Cohn wasn't as great as a cello player as everyone says she was. People tend to overhype players of non-mainstream instruments just because they haven't really seen anyone else to compare them to.

I originally wanted to play cello when I was younger but I was put on violin because my fingers were so small. Did any of the dudes in your orchestra do German bow? That upside-down shit looks so cool.

Brant Taylor is my fave local cellist. You can spot him in the back row of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra performances (lol, must be too much time playing with his band Pink Martini (I recall somb liking them)). He used to do these Rush Hour concerts and play all this crazy stuff. Cool guy. Teaches at Roosevelt.

Yeah. Exception for Rasputina. But when you add cello to rock, you have the freedom to break the form and vibrato and just make sounds.

You going to continue in college? Auditions, yuck.

I'm going to Columbia College Chicago next year, and I hope to be in their symphony orchestra. A couple friends and I started a band with Guitar/Drums/Cello but we havent gotten our shit together yet to make it happen. Id encourage picking up the cello, and learning how to play. It's never too late. I remember seeing a man who must have been in his 70's just beginning to play at my old private lessons a few years ago. You can find a decent sounding used cello for around 300 bucks, maybe another 100 for a good bow. Do a rent-to-own system. Make payments on it until it's yours. That's what I did for my first cello, my parents paid for it. It costs about 800, and sounds beautiful. My bow was 200, so about 1,000 all together for a really good instrument. But seriously, rent one for a while to see if you like it.
