Bill allowing dogs in outdoor cafes advances

The Associated Press
Published March 30, 2007, 5:42 AM CDT

Fido could be your next lunch date.

Legislation being considered by the Illinois House says dogs can accompany owners at outdoor cafes.

The bill is sponsored by State Rep. John Fritchey (D-Chicago). It passed the Senate earlier this month.

The legislation applies to cities with populations over a million, meaning only Chicago qualifies.

The bill doesn't propose allowing animals inside restaurants. It says that restaurants would have to comply with health codes and could refuse service to a dog owner if the animal's behavior threatens the health or safety of other diners.

The bill also doesn't apply to service animals, like guide dogs, which are already allowed in restaurants under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Ugh. There's already a place where your dog can sit under the table while you eat. It's called home. Fucking savages.

I'm gonna teach my dog to smoke just so we can go to lunch with Yancy and watch his head explode.

the occasions i find myself bemoaning the presence of a dog are few. this is not one of them.

Most situations are made better by the presence of a dog. You people must not be dog owners. Waaaay too many cat people on this message board. Dogs rule. I'd love to be able to take my dog for a walk, and then stop and get something to eat. On a nice sunny day - both me and the dog are very happy.

what the fuck is wrong with you.

having a dog sit with you outside while at a diner or some such is awesome. and in chicago, they already let you do it, as long as the restaurant is cool with it. ad most restaurants (at least where i go) Are cool with it. dogs need to get out and not be cooped in the house all day.

Yeah, dogs need to get out of the house. Doesn't mean I want to see that annoying "I'd give anything for a bite of that delicious food" face. Or smelling them when I'm trying to eat. That's right, dog people: dogs stink. "Mine doesn't!" Yes he does. You're just used to it.

I love dogs, but I agree with yancy. Dogs in bars are A-OK. While I am eating at a cafe, not so much.

my dog's breath smells like asshole. i don't think i would bring him with to an outdoor cafe for fear of him pissing on someone who was about to eat some coleslaw.

then dont stare at other peoples dogs when you go out to eat. easy as pie. roughly 96% of the people who would even take their dogs out to a cafe have well behaved dogs that will just sit there for most of the meal. and YOU ARE OUTSIDE. can you really smell other peopels dogs while outside? you're just being an enormous asshole for no reason. i guess i dont find it offensive because i am so used to it already. it adds to the meal and, if conversation gets boring, you can always play with the dog.

Yes, when they are panting two feet away from my cobb salad, I can smell their breath, and that isn't so hot.

Kinda hard not to when they're in your line of sight and giving you the pitiful face. Yeah, you know the one I'm talking about. That shit's annoying.

roughly 96% of the people who would even take their dogs out to a cafe have well behaved dogs that will just sit there for most of the meal.

You're roughly 96% full of shit. The vast majority of dogs I'm familiar with aren't remotely well behaved enough to sit a few feet feet away from several people eating. What this law would do is grant a license to annoy to the substantial number of dog owners whose pets aren't that well behaved.

can you really smell other peopels dogs while outside?

In the cramped quarters of Chicago sidewalk dining? Hell yes.

i guess i dont find it offensive because i am so used to it already.

I can understand. Your buddy and mine who shall remain nameless has a rambunctious beast, so I can see how other dogs would pale in comparison.

it adds to the meal

Only in Chinatown.

no, the dog of which we both speak of is so well behaved outside at cafes. which is why i love it. she just sits there, people comes over and say what a cute dog and strike up a conversation (which, admittedly, is my favourite part. talking to strangers is fun!), gives her treats. there's no jumping or barking, just a really nice meal and an excuse to go out with your dog. i'd rather eat near a dog than a baby.

yes, because dog hair and dander really add to the overall dining experience!

i dont know what you guys are thinking. its not like the dog has its own chair and menu and meal and shit. it sits by your feet under the table. if you get dog hair and dander in your meal, you may want to not cuddle with the dog during brunch.

You have low standards. Guide dogs know the score.

i'd rather eat near a dog than a baby.

Babies can be noisy, but unless they're changing its diaper at the table, I can deal.
