Tickets for the Glastonbury festival have sold out in under two hours.

Fears that a registration system, designed to prevent touting, would put off fans were not realised when 400,000 signed up.

Organisers said the 137,500 tickets available to the public were snapped up just one hour and 45 minutes after going on sale on Sunday at 0900 BST.

They added that they were happy with how the sales went despite websites and phone lines struggling to cope.

Sell-out

In 2005, when the last Glastonbury Festival took place, tickets sold out in less than three hours - a record in the event's history.

The Arctic Monkeys, Dame Shirley Bassey and The Who will all perform at the festival, but the full line-up will not be released until June.

Michael Eavis, who owns the farm where the festival is based, said: "We had a quarter of a million of people queuing up to get through. It's probably the fastest time we have ever sold out.

"We had coach package tickets as well and people were forced to buy those at the tail end of the sale."

Second chance

He was also pleased the system of registering and then using a reference number had worked well.

"Its a great system. It's the first time it's ever been done - it's just gone so well it's just unbelievable. The system has worked really, really well and it's a first.

"Unfortunately there will be a lot of people that will be disappointed. Only two in three get through, but such is the demand of the festival - but that is in itself great after 37 years of trying to get it right."

He added that there would be another chance to buy tickets on 22 April at 0900 BST, when those transactions which had failed would result in more tickets being put back on the market.

Licence agreed

Tickets without coach travel cost £145 with fans able to buy up to four each.

Over the years, Mr Eavis has massively increased investment into preventing gate-crashers and drug dealers entering the site.

Earlier this week Mendip District Council in Somerset approved a four-year licence deal, securing the festival's future until 2010.

The 177,000 capacity event takes place in Somerset from 22-24 June.

so what exactly does coach travel include? i mean, are they coming in from different areas or does everyone have to go to a specific place to be picked up? it just seems like a rather unnecessary add-on.

It's a bit of a bugger to get to. I assume you can get it from London or local(ish) train stations.

Full Glastonbury line-up released

The full line-up of musicians to perform at the Glastonbury festival later this month has been announced.

The Who, The Killers and Arctic Monkeys will be headlining on the Pyramid Stage during the three-day event.

Among the more than 200 acts listed are Rufus Wainwright, Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse, The Gossip, Paul Weller, Chemical Brothers and Shirley Bassey.

The festival, which starts on 22 June, will be the largest yet, with an extended capacity of 177,500.

John Peel Stage

That figure was agreed as part of a new four-year licence for the festival, taking it up to 2010.

"The line-up this year is so good we've even surpassed ourselves," said organiser Michael Eavis.

"From the snazziest new bands to the old boys' specials, you've not seen anything like this before - anywhere," he added.

Kasabian, The Fratellis, Bloc Party and The Kooks are among the other big acts which have been confirmed to play on the largest stage at the festival.

On the second Other Stage, Bjork, The Coral, Editors and Babyshambles will perform.

Headlining the John Peel Stage will be Hot Chip, The Twang and The Gossip.

'Successful' registration

It is the first time music lovers have had to register for tickets for the Somerset festival.

In March around 400,000 people registered by sending in their details and a photo of themselves in the hope that they would eventually be able to buy tickets.

Organisers have since hailed the registration process as a success as they say it has prevented touts from buying tickets.

This year festival-goers will be asked to make a difference to climate change by reducing their carbon footprint.

As well as eating organic food, washing in carbon neutral showers, using eco-friendly toilets and being supplied with recycled toilet paper, revellers will be invited to join the I Count campaign.

It details 16 steps to reduce their environmental impact, and aims to sign up 100,000 people in three days.

A small number of returned tickets go on sale on the See Tickets website on Sunday.

Before a Wiki search, I did not know what this sentence meant.

Our major networks need to start airing rock festivals. They seem to devote prime airtime for special concert events only when it's Garth Brooks or The Dixie Chicks.
