OK here goes. In this thread feel free to suggest and discuss the best films released between 1990 and 1999. The limit 100 films. anything with (TV) after it on IMDB is a no-go. Only TV films that recut for theatrical distribution (presumably in a different country) are good here. If it got a theatrical release in the 80's in the country(-ies) of origin then there's no debate, it is in. Anything else may need you personally to explain the situation if you feel it's debatable.

Yet again I hope this will put an emphasis on ordering the higher end of the list and won't penalise those who submit smaller lists or give a bias to either the films we've all seen or high ranking films on a few lists. I think this has worked well so far.

The deadline for votes is 25th May and the list will be counted down during the month of June before I go away.

There are too many to mention, so I'll highlight a couple that might get overlooked.


Only Yesterday: The BEST anime of the entire 1990s is also one of the least-seen. Isao Takahata who did the absolutely crushing Grave of the Fireflies directed this one, one of the very few Studio Ghibli films to not get an American DVD release (Purportedly because Disney balked at the one scene where a young girl doesn't want her mother to write her a note excusing her from P.E. because everyone will think she's begun her period) is also one of the best. It's the story of an unmarried woman who goes on holiday out in the country. While she is there, she falls into the gentle routine of farm life, and reminisces about her youth. It's a gorgeous, heartfelt story with amazing animation. Deeply moving, I would expect this to place somewhere in my Top 10.


The Bird People in China: Seemingly everyone that knows Takashi Miike for his hyper-violent, nightmarish films like Audition, Dead or Alive, or Ichi the Killer, but just when you think you've got him pigeonholed, you come across a movie like this which has more in common with the first movie I discussed, then anything else. It's about a young businessman sent to check out rare jade deposits in a small village. It's part manic road movie, part expository on the disconnect between modern man and modern society and a desire to return to a simpler life. All at once, it's funny, sad, and hopeful, which aren't three words you would commonly associate with Miike's films (Well, maybe funny).




Chungking Express: Quite simply my favourite movie of all-time, and, therefore, almost a lock to be my #1 movie of the 90s. Directed by Wong Kar Wai, Chungking Express is split in half, the first half being a heart-broke cop who gets mixed up with a mysterious blonde-wig clad smuggler, while the second-half sees the employee at the titular diner fall for another cop. Nobody photographs women like Wong Kar Wai and cinematographer Christopher Doyle, and they have two very different muses here in the nearly unrecognizable, behind her curly wig and large shades, Brigitte Lin, and pop singer turned actress, the luminous Faye Wong. Add to the mix, two of Hong Kong's finest actors, in Tony Leung and Takeshi Kaneshiro, and you have a veritable Hong Kong acting workshop. But, putting all of the film snobbery and techniques aside, it's just a beautiful romantic movie. Characters staring through rainy windows, dancing as an expression of being in love, or doing completely eccentric things like the first cop who buys a can of pineapple with an expiry date of every single day in April to commemorate his break-up (If she doesn't return to him by the time he has every can, he will move on, he tells himself). It's just a moving, hopeful, and, ultimately thrilling film.

adore this film.
but i really can't decide if i like it more than "fallen angels". "chunking express" is beautiful and so romantic, but i think "fallen angels" is one of the most humane movies ever.

i want to submit my list for this too. will have to see some more lists first, so i can remember whatever i saw but forgotten about.
