It really seems like this happens more often than every 17 years.
Whatever.

It really seems like this happens more often than every 17 years.

There are twelve 17-year broods and three 13-year broods that happen in different years and different areas of the country. So pretty much every year you hear some talk of cicadas happening somewhere.

But this is the big year for the brood located in the Chicago area.

It's very exciting. I wasn't in the area 17 years ago, but I have strong memories of the cicadas 34 years ago when I was a kid.

This page has a nice chart (about a middle of the way through) showing what year each brood appears and where that brood is located.

one of my fondest/least fond memories growing up was going to Great America during the dreaded cicada invasion of 1990-something. I remember walking around and hearing those damned things chirping everywhere and falling out of trees. It was kind of cool until I realized they were falling in my nachos and shit. I was forever scarred.

Ahh... that would explain it. I was in Ohio for the 2004 brood. Thanks for dropping the knowledge.
Whatever.

i was in PA for the 2004 one, but maybe i was out of town during their jaunt to the surface because i don't remember them at all. and the hype was outstanding. i do, though, remember the 1987 one.

so if a group of dudes were planning on robbing banks while wearing cicada outfits this would be the year to do it right?
