SEVEN AGES OF ROCK : BBC Television Documentary

Posted Image

This is an excellent documentary that started last weekend on BBC television - I think everybody here would enjoy this very much. I shall try to update this post each week with all 7 episodes.

Part 1: The Birth Of Rock

The rock revolution of the 1960s seen through the life and music of Jimi Hendrix. The first doomed icon of rock, Hendrix was the synthesis of everything that had gone before him and all that was to come. The Birth Of Rock also explores the influence of rhythm & blues on a generation of British musicians such as The Rolling Stones, Cream and The Who, and how the song-writing of Bob Dylan and studio developments of The Beatles transformed the possibilities and ambitions of rock.

Thanks for this... but rapidshare makes you wait way too long between downloads. That would take me three days.

why do people still use rapidshare when there are so many free upload sites out there?
i only start threads when im drunk. im scared of the ridicule you will impose when im sober.

Part 2: White Light, White Heat
The story of how artistic and conceptual expression permeated rock. From the pop-art multi-media experiments of Andy Warhol and the Velvet Underground to the sinister gentility of Peter Gabriel's Genesis, White Light, White Heat traces how rock became a vehicle for artistic ideas and theatrical performance. We follow Pink Floyd from the fated art school genius of Syd Barrett through the global success of Dark Side of the Moon to the ultimate rock theatre show, The Wall. Along the way, the film explores the retro-futurism of Roxy Music and the protean world of David Bowie.

and completely misses out on Marc Bolan and uses footage that was first seen in Dancing In The Street ten years ago. I am enjoying this but I'm not really learning anything.
Nice bowl of Crunchy Nut you got here, pretty expensive as I recall.

T-Rex did seem like a glaring omission but perhaps they will feature a little later in the series.
A lot of people are slating this series - i think this is because most people will focus on their own heroes and expect to see them feature heavily in their genre.
In all, i'm finding it quite enjoyable and its easy to see a lot of work has gone into this series - i think overall it's a highly commendable production.

How can it begin to claim the history of rock and roll as emergent force without acknowledging the actual beginning??? They start in the 60's?? What the fuck, how much shit was influenced from the 50's when rock and roll actually began? Elvis, Jerry Lee, Carl Perkins, Eddie Cochran, Chuck Berry, Gene Vincent, Bill Haley to name a FEW I mean even the Lennon and McCartney came together because of their love of original rock and roll! bah.

Excuse me, but where are THE SMITHS!!! Are they in the Glam Rock section? The early brit-pop section. Seems ridiculous to not have The Smiths even mentioned in the title description, such a seminal, subliminal band.

This is a series - the era that The Smiths are featured in has not been aired yet , so be patient, they will feature...

I too love The Smiths.

Part 3 : Blank Generation : Punk 1973-1980

A tale of two cities, London and New York and the birth of punk. Each city created a bastard child that marked the biggest and fundamental shift in popular music since Elvis walked into Sun Studios. Blank Generation unpicks the relationship between the bankrupt New York and the class and race-riven London of the mid-1970's and explores the music of The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Ramones, Television, Patti Smith, The Damned and Buzzcocks.

Seven Ages Of Rock : Part 4 Never Say Die - Heavy Metal - 1970 -1991

The story of the longest surviving and certainly the loudest genre of rock, heavy metal. With no sign of disappearing, metal has been the most controversial and misunderstood of all rock genres. Emerging at the tail end of the hippy dream from the rust belt of industrial England, heavy metal would go on to secure the most loyal fan base of all. With Black Sabbath as the undisputed Godfathers, we follow their highs and lows, and, along the journey, meet Deep Purple, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Metallica.

No mention of Led Zepp at all though, I know they are covered next week but kind of daft. Also why was this one after the Punk episode?

Well that's the big question, innit. Zep always tried to distance themselves from metal.

In fact, a lot of the snootier rock hacks did the same, on account of metal being unclean and all that. They were heavy fucking metal of course, but people don't like admitting it.

Also why was this one after the Punk episode?

Stupid series remit of dating everything. It predated punk by 'officially' 6-7 years, but survived it by about 11 or so.

Also, thoughts now up~!
