With the exceptions of Johnny Depp, Scarlett Johansen, Bill Paxton, and Nicolas Cage...I don't think any of the above actors can even be considered "over rated"; they're just famous, but with little or no critical acclaim. And ftr, I don't think Johnny Depp, Bill Paxton, or Nicolas Cage are over rated. Sure, the latter parts of their careers have focused on blockbusters (especially Cage), but they each have a significant enough body of work to justify their "ratings."

I'll throw out Jack Nicholson. From Easy Rider through the The Departed, he has played the exact same smug motherfucker in every role (himself). Sometimes that persona works for the character (i.e. The Shining), but sometimes I think he's awarded the part simply because he's Hollywood royalty, and it threatens to drag down an entire film; see The Departed, where he played one of the worst portrayals of a mob boss I've ever seen in an otherwise good movie.

but, i was thinking that maybe you do need actors, or at least viewers do need actors, that play the same personality over and over. i watch films with jack nicholson, not because of the plot or directing or whatever, but because it's that jack motherfucking nicholson who's in the film.
