So I just made that thread about Sebadoh III. They recorded the album when they were living together in their early twenties, getting high and jamming out some tunes with the tapes rolling. The platonic ideal of musicians that rarely is achieved. Always loved the kind of communal aspiration in a band, living together and making music. Dylan and The Band did it and made Basement Tapes, Ween did it with The Pod and Pure Guava, who else?

Yeah, I love this idea. It's pretty much my "platonic ideal" for being in a band. Just hanging out, fucking around with tape machines, jamming into the night.

The epitome of this? Faust. German hippies with awesome beards hanging out in an abandoned school house, making incredible sounds, jamming, recording all of it, and then doing who the fuck knows what with those tapes to make them sound like some of the most otherworldly music ever. Amazing.

Also, beards are essential for this. See: Akron/Family

Damo Suzuki: So, um, yeah. Getting older isn't as bad as it sounds. Better than being young & poor (DjDrake) or young & slutty (SG) or young, poor and slutty (Paves); am I right?

Alright, my friends. It's time for another solid little rock jam

oh yeah, I forgot about the Germans! I think Can lived out on a farm somewhere, too. To bring it back to the USA, Seals and Crofts lived on a commune and were subscribers to the Baha'i faith. They wrote Summer Breeze, an awesome LiteRock staple.

My mom met Seals & Crofts when they played at her college.

She also met Alice Cooper when he did the same.

Anyways, yeah, the Grateful Dead, lol. Anthem of the Sun pretty much sucks my shitty asshole, but it has that communal, kitchen-sink vibe, so I jus' gotta dig that shit!

Ha, a couple years ago, this was an utmost fantasy of mine, the goal being to steal Broken Social Scene away from being North America's premier "indie rock collective" or whatever. Seriously, though, this would be awesome. Simakos, Sid Hartha, By Tor guitar solo, Nic/Mutant Disco, Zero As A Limit, St. Park, Freddie Freelance, some ladies doing something... hardcore.

Oh, man, that reminds me, this thread was awesome.

EDIT:

Frankie: Bass (dunno if he plays, but he'd probably be good)

Primus - Tales From the Punchbowl (made me get good at bass, then the older kids wanted me to play with them and showed me how to use a bong... errrrgh)

I believe Amon Duul II lived in a communal setting too.

Whenever I put my Espers record in at work, RealPlayer informs me that the members of the band apparently live together in a dwelling known as "Esperhaus"...but that's just what my computer says.

Led Zeppelin lived together at Bron-Yr-Aur for a while. Well at least Plant and Page did when they wrote parts of LZIII.
But among the jackals, the panthers, the bitch hounds, The apes, the scorpions, the vultures, the serpents, The yelping, howling, growling, crawling monsters, In the filthy menagerie of our vices, There is one more ugly, more wicked, more filthy! Although he makes neither great gestures nor great cries, He would willingly make of the earth a shambles And, in a yawn, swallow the world; He is Ennui! — His eye watery as though with tears, He dreams of scaffolds as he smokes his hookah pipe. You know him reader, that refined monster, — Hypocritish reader, — my fellow, — my brother!

I would totally live with some SOMBies. We wouldn't even have to write any music. We could just suck and fuck all day! It'd be great.

I think International Harvester was another one of those communal bands. Although it didn't last too long this is a brainbender of an album.
