So I take this band for granted probably way too much (which is saying a lot considering I went to a party as Jack no more than 2 weeks ago), but "Rag And Bone" and "Icky Thump" are rocking my world right now. I purpose we use this thread to fawn over them, or at least upload stuff to boost our music collections and others.

I said in another thread that few bands around today are as in need of a b-sides/rarities/unreleased stuff/demos/live stuff/etc. compilation (or BOX SET!) than Jack and Meg. I purpose we do it ourselves in this thread. Here's my contribution.

So I've never owned actual copies of any of this band's releases save for GBMS. I plan on buying Icky Thump, but I can never find their records at used stores. Plus De Stijl, WBC and Elephant all list for like at least $15 new these days which is aka as fuck that.

My question is are the hard copies actually worth owning, ie do they have lyric sheets, interesting liner notes, etc? I find that I've almost never looked in the GBMS book mainly b/c there are no lyrics.


On another note, I've never even HEARD this record (heard plenty of the songs from concerts and boots and stuff), but I should probably add it to my collection. Shameless fish request...

That album has some damn good songs, "Jimmy The Exploder" and "Screwdriver" in particular. Worth seeking out.

I have Elephant on colored vinyl, and I'm not sure why. I don't even like that album.

Come to think of it, I'm not too crazy about any of their albums. Haven't listened to one all the way through in years. Some great songs here and there, though. Those first two White Blood Cells singles are simply unbeatable.

they are damn good songs and i know i've heard screwdriver before, however i can't remember it specifically. it was one of the times i saw them. i kinda hear you re: not being crazy about their albums. my preferred way of listening to this band is putting my 60 something songs by them on shuffle, but then again the reason i liked GBMS so much was that even though it had some of their most dull and off-putting songs, it was their best "album" per se. regardless, i want to own their CDs so i can listen to the white stripes in places other than my room where my computer is. however, i only really want to drop the money if the liner notes are good. and stuff.

I have some songs that were released on the Japanese Imports, some b sides, some peel sessions. Would there be any interest in that?


As for the actual cds. They usually have some nice designs/pictures, but I don't know if they are really worth it for the lyrics or anything. I just buy cds because I have some unfounded Catholic guilt.

For both of those sites you can make wish lists, so whenever they get a used copy you will be notified. Both sites also run deals like free shipping and percentages off, so if you get them at the right time, you can get the albums (or other albums) for pretty cheap.

thanks for the link to the debut. i would be interested in any and all imports/b-sides/peel stuff if you're willing. thanks for the reminder about django's. what's their story exactly? i know 2nd hand tunes in evanston has/had some connection with them. i should probably look for CDs there more often, esp. considering its so hard to get multiple disks i want from one amazon seller, which is what i normally try to do.

i know the second hand tunes that used to be on clark was affiliated with djangos too. the website is basically the entire stock of all their stores nationwide. so if you order five albums, one might come from minn, one from portland, etc.

it is best to find it when they have a free shipping deal. you can usually find some really chaeap stuff on there. i got a couple criterion dvds on there too for 6 bucks. i'd say making a list is the best way to go.

pitchfork posted 3 videos from some recent tv show performance. i really like the bluesy song that jack plays with his acoustic guitar.

i love the white stripes. i know i'm not as "cultured" on the more obscure indie rock as most people here, but to me this band is one of the very few modern bands that make great rock and roll music. they're a great albums band too. anything pre-white blood cells feels a bit amateur to me. good songs here and there, but it's with white blood cells that they show what they really all about. elephant has stronger guitar playing from jack and in general it's a bit more diverse in sound from white blood cells. the sound is much bigger and that's probably why a lot of people where turned off by that album cos it wasn't indie/lo-fi enough for them. get behind me satan was a grower for me. i didn't like it at first, cos it didn't rock as much as elephant, but it's really a great album. their most sophisticated i'd say, and "i'm lonely (but i aint that lonely yet)" is probably the most touching song jack ever wrote. i was surprised to know how many people on this board think that it's the best album by the white stripes and i think i'm starting to agree with them.

listening to the new album right now for the first time and it's shaping to be something like a mix between their last two albums. i rather like it. "effect & cause" is my favourite song on it right now. i definitely dig the album.

It sounds pretty solid to me so far. Maybe my favorite since WBC. When listening to "Rag and Bone" Jack's conversational singing style kind of conjurs up David Lee Roth for me. That may seem ridiculous to some but its just the image that pops into my head.
