Social sites reveal class divide

Fans of MySpace and Facebook are divided by much more than which music they like, suggests a study.

A six-month research project has revealed a sharp division along class lines among the American teenagers flocking to the social network sites.

The research suggests those using Facebook come from wealthier homes and are more likely to attend college.

By contrast, MySpace users tend to get a job after finishing high school rather than continue their education.

Site-seeing

The conclusions are based on interviews with many teenage users of the social networking sites by PhD student Danah Boyd from the School of Information Sciences at UC Berkeley.

In a preliminary draft of the research, Ms Boyd said defining "class" in the US was difficult because, unlike many other nations, it did not map directly to income.

Instead, she said, class in the US was more about social life and networks - how people define themselves and who they define themselves with.

"Social networks are strongly connected to geography, race, and religion; these are also huge factors in lifestyle divisions and thus 'class'," she wrote.

Broadly, Ms Boyd found Facebook users tend to be white and come from families who are keen for children to get the most out of school and go on to college.

Characterising Facebook users she said: "They are in honors classes, looking forward to the prom, and live in a world dictated by after school activities."

By contrast, the average MySpace teenager tendeds to come from families where parents did not go to college, she said.

Ms Boyd also found far more teens from immigrant, Latino and Hispanic families on MySpace as well as many others who are not part of the "dominant high school popularity paradigm".

"MySpace has most of the kids who are socially ostracised at school because they are geeks, freaks, or queers," she said.

Teenage users of both sites have very strong opinions about the social network they do not use, she noted.

Ms Boyd was wary of drawing too many conclusions from her research and calling Myspace "bad" or Facebook "good" or condemning social networks out of hand.

She wrote: "This division is just another way in which technology is mirroring societal values."

In some ways, Ms Boyd wrote, social networking sites are helping teenagers cope with the stresses of 21st Century life.

"Teens are using social network sites to build community and connect with their peers," she said. "And through it, they are showcasing all of the good, bad, and ugly of today's teen life."

Ten points to anyone who can spot the obvious point not mentioned.
Nice bowl of Crunchy Nut you got here, pretty expensive as I recall.

That for awhile Facebook only let users in who had an "@_.edu" email address.

That's some faulty "research"

"After much thought into this, I have finally come to a conclusion as to why the ‘Meet the Spartans’ commercial is so funny:

It is an interesting choice to have Sanjaya sing ‘I’m not gay,’ as his final words on earth. As he is plummeting into a seemingly bottomless pit, he does not say ‘dear god no,’ ‘I love you mom,’ or even simply ‘argh.’ He instead takes the moment to reaffirm to the world, in spite of their doubts, that he is not a homosexual. Not only that, but he continues to sing, despite falling to his certain death. The distinct lack of plausibility of this situation is what produces giggles from our mouth. It is the antithesis to the belief that ‘it’s funny because it is true.’

Here's my take as the other end of the demo. I have only spent a few minutes on Facebook and suspect that since I'm not 20 or even 30 something and am not directly involved in the web 2.0 community I would not find anyone I knew. In fact, I did have it check my email list and no one showed up. Facebook will be abandoned for the next big thing at some point. Due to the fact that younger folks tend to follow the trend and flavor of the day and to be where their friends are. Myspace, on the other hand, will see it's demo keep getting older and older for two reasons. First, as I mentioned, the abandonment of the young. Secondly, typical oldsters are late to catch on and long on making a change.

True. I heard the other day on the radio about a new one that's based on GPS and knowing exactly where your friends are.

No thanks.

I wouldn't be too soon to predict the demise of Facebook, every single kid in college has it and it has the major advantage of making it impossible to create the kind of audiovisual holocaust any 14 year old can easily unleash on Myspace via c/p template

Like I'm pretty sure Friendster was never anywhere near the level of saturation that Facebook has reached among a certain demographic

I think Friendster is the massive one of the lot in the far east. I have no evidence for this.

i remember reading an article about how the guys at Friendster were offered some insane amount like $500 mil or so and they turned it down. now they're being offered $50,000. Someone in the article mentioned they had ideas but were hestitant to act on any ideas and then MySpace & FB came in and gathered more interest dont forget the very forgettable CampusHook.com

On 60 minutes last night they had a story about a webpage that links children who come from the same sperm donor. They list the donor number and the clinic, and one guy's sperm created 20 kids.

I just like that there's a pseudo-scientific study that proves what every 15 year old on the planet knows intuitively. There's no Black people on Facebook, who knew!? I did like the article though.

study is funny because facebook was made just for college students at the start and only recently made it open. Also, I'm goin to say that facebook is on the decline. They added a bunch of shitty "apps" that take up tons of space and make facebook into myspace. Lots of kids don't like it, so I predict migration on the horizon.
But among the jackals, the panthers, the bitch hounds, The apes, the scorpions, the vultures, the serpents, The yelping, howling, growling, crawling monsters, In the filthy menagerie of our vices, There is one more ugly, more wicked, more filthy! Although he makes neither great gestures nor great cries, He would willingly make of the earth a shambles And, in a yawn, swallow the world; He is Ennui! — His eye watery as though with tears, He dreams of scaffolds as he smokes his hookah pipe. You know him reader, that refined monster, — Hypocritish reader, — my fellow, — my brother!

to what? I don't like the shitty apps or making it open to everyone. would the migration take it to myspace or something new and cool that we don't even know about yet.

Mentioned a number of times in the article.

Some of the apps are great (see: Grafitti, Election '08, etc.), and can be controlled user-side (if you don't like your friends new 'Honesty Box', you can close it so you'll never see it again). Very well thought-out and integrated.

People just aren't receptive to change. They're even less receptive to a 'migration'.
