I know there's a small amount of love for Idaho on this board, but not nearly to the level that they deserve, considering the appeal they'd probably have for most of you. Like BobtheSquid's House of Love thread, I'm just gonna spin off my 'greatest hits' thread contribution into a hopefully full-blown Idaho lovefest.

chances of anyone downloading this are slim to none but I have to try anyway; every once in a while you run across one of those obscure bands that you feel the need to share with as many people as possible, just due to the massive injustice of their obscurity, and Idaho is a textbook case of this. It's mainly the project of Jeff Martin, a guitarist and classically trained pianist who plays almost every instrument on the albums. You could call it 'slowcore' along the lines of Galaxie 500 or American Music Club (ie. there's a lot of reverb) but it goes so much deeper than that; instead of just stretching out simple melodies to the breaking point he uses four-string guitars, bizarre alternate tunings, ambient noise, unorthodox percussion, and anything else handy to create hauntingly beautiful piano pieces ("Levitate", "On the Shore"), catchy, relatively lightweight indie pop ("Only in the Desert"), the rare anthemic rock song ("Pomegranate Bleeding"), and moody but gorgeous guitar work ("Jump Up", "If You Dare", "Goldenseal", etc.). Prodigiously talented songwriter, and one that I'm sure a lot of you would really get into.

1) Levitate
2) Wondering the Fields
3) Yesterday's Unwinding
4) The Thick and the Thin
5) If You Dare
6) Down in Waves
7) On the Shore
8) Pomegranate Bleeding
9) Goldenseal
10) Stare at the Sky
11) Jump Up
12) Tensile
13) Orange
14) 20 Years
15) Hearts of Palm
16) A Sound Awake
17) Only in the Desert

I like em. Forbidden EP was in the favorite EPs thread and i snatched it. It's some good stuff, low key enjoyable music.
But among the jackals, the panthers, the bitch hounds, The apes, the scorpions, the vultures, the serpents, The yelping, howling, growling, crawling monsters, In the filthy menagerie of our vices, There is one more ugly, more wicked, more filthy! Although he makes neither great gestures nor great cries, He would willingly make of the earth a shambles And, in a yawn, swallow the world; He is Ennui! — His eye watery as though with tears, He dreams of scaffolds as he smokes his hookah pipe. You know him reader, that refined monster, — Hypocritish reader, — my fellow, — my brother!

I wish I had put "The Right Escape" on here, it's the b-side to "Pomegranate Bleeding" and is definitely the better song. He doesn't write actual rock music too often but this single is solid proof that he could do so if he wanted. Here it is, just for shits.

I first heard this band through the EP thread started by Simakos about a month or two ago--it was the Forbidden EP. Loved it from the start and have since been mining for more. So far I've amassed: Alas, Hearts of Palm, Levitate, and Three Sheets to the Wind. Is there a definitive must-have by these guys (perhaps I already have it). Any recommendations would be welcome...shit I even love the name...it actually brings to mind way cooler imagery than potato fields.

One of the coolest shows I ever saw- Low and Idaho touring for I Could Live In Hope and This Way Out. There were maybe twenty five people there. Low headlined that night, they were taking turns each night opening and headlining. I didn't know much about Idaho. They came out with these weird four string tiny guitars and blew me away. Amazing performance.

that's the only time i saw Idaho either, but unfortunately i had no clue who they were at the time, now that i've since really gotten into them I'm bummed that i've never seen them since.

didn't think anyone downloaded that EP, this warms my heart. My favorite is Levitate so I'd say that's the must-have if any, but all four of those are really fucking good.

Let me formally acknowledge your contribution and thank you--didn't realize it was this topic's starter who uploaded the EP (I remembered a different avatar, didn't make the connection). That was a pretty crazy storm of EPs coming down the pipe...took awhile to absorb it all....still absorbin'. Levitate is pretty damned excellent. Something about his voice reminds me of Adem (Ilhan). It's always great to run across music that makes you say "How the hell did these guys slip thru the radar?".
