Well, I'm finally getting around to doing my promised Nesmith thread. This is an offshoot of the Monkees thread that has been completed with some great help from some of you.

Nesmith was my man in The Monkees. The one with the real talent. As I've said, he could be considered the originator of country rock before Parsons and the like.

A great bit of well known trivia...his aunt invented liquid paper and he inherited a great deal of money.
These days he's much involved in his Video Ranch website. There's even an online world, similar to Second Life, where virtual concerts and the like occur. I haven't been there yet but one of these days I'll do a free day pass.

Michael Nesmith wikipedia entry

He has pretty much hung up his music and touring hat (pun intended). That's a shame for I never did get to see him.

There's a great interview with him that was recently done and can be found here on the Monkees website. It's up to two parts right now.

As with The Monkees tribute I'll be upping his work so that those not familiar may discover the joys I've found. As always, maybe this will prompt you to go out and get the real deals. Though most of this stuff is out of print in the US and available only on import.

His early work has been reissued as two-fers. The first of which is Magnetic South and Loose Salute, both originally released in 1970.

That 80's work of Nesmith's like Cruisin' and Lucy and Romona, while decent isn't as good as the earlier work. Don't get turned off by these clips and miss out. Not trying to dismiss this work though as we'll get to it down the line.

I heard "Joanne" one morning on the radio (WRUW, RG) on the way to work (in my pre-ipod, post-CD player stolen from my car days) and it was one of those "holy shit" moments where nothing in the world sounded better at that moment than that one song. Haunting, beautiful, delicate -- it seemed to materialize out of the airwaves like a ghost. I buy any Nesmith-solo vinyl I find nowadays.

That's exactly the sort of thing that his music is capable of. Especially for those that only believe him to be part of some pseudo TV rock band.
Joanne, like many of these songs, is gorgeous.

AND EVEN THEN...if you made a compilation of all the Monkees tracks that Michael Nesmith sang lead on, you'd have one of the greatest country-rock albums this side of Burrito Deluxe.

Joanne, like many of these songs, is gorgeous.

And it was actually a hit single, too!

Great thread Rob. I remember you talking about starting a Nesmith thread a while back. I'm not very familiar with his solo work, but look forward to hearing it. He wrote/sang many of my favorite Monkees songs.

Glad you are diggin' them DJ. Of course, more installments in weeks to come. I'm missing a few releases so we'll have to see what others may be able to bring to the table as we get there. Chronologically speaking.

a lot of rock stars are incredibly nice in person. go to nesmith's website and you'll come away feeling like the theme is "fuck off."
