Seeing King's name mentioned in the author's thread, reminds me . . . . In one of his short stories collections there's a story written as a screenplay that involves a a phone call placed from the future warning a wife of her husband's death. Or something like that. I don't remember the details but it was beautiful. Anyone know what I'm talking about? Why hasn't anyone made that thing into a play or movie yet? Otherwise, post about your favorite King story or whatever . . . "Different Seasons" is probably my favorite thing he's ever done. I used to be obsessed with him but kind of outgrew it I guess. I think I'm a few books behind in the Dark Tower series and don't really care to catch up.

I'm the exact same way- I tore through the first four and have now been 150 pages from finishing The Wolves Of Calla for about 2 years. Don't know if I'll ever pick it back up.

"Sorry Wrong Number" is the story, I believe, Tweed. Dark Tower is worth finishing. I happen to be in my 2nd or 3rd reread of Wolves, and probably will finish it all off again. It goes into some directions that no one would expect. Trust me.

As I sort of mentioned in the overrated authors thread, Stephen King is my number 1 guilty pleasure. I very rarely read him, but more than once, coming home from an arduous semester, I have been known to collapse on the couch with a Stephen King novel. It's like television, I guess. Mindless but with its own value and charm. I haven't read any of his short stories, but 'Salem's Lot scared the shit out of me.

POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT:

I know that it is somehow related to the Stand (favorite King novel, btw.)...

Eh...almost every King book gets tied into the Dark Tower series at some point, even if it's just a passing mention.

Was always a fan of It, the Skeleton Crew collection (The Mist, hellz yes for the movie), Insomnia, and Bag of Bones. BoB is really underrated.

Yeah, huge fan of "The Mist." Movie could suck, although it's directed by Darabont, who has a good track record with SK short stories, and has Frank Pembleton in it, too.

OK, fine - I read a bunch of Stephen King, too...but I was young and didn't know what I was doing! Anyway, I'd say the story "Rage" ranks as his best. It's in that collection of stuff he did under his other nom de plume Richard Bachman -- it's a meditation on teenaged confusion and frustrated sexuality and violence and it forecast Columbine by, what, 20 years? Great little story. And I'll never forget the sentence: "A million pregnant women can't be wrong" w/re to eating crackers to calm an upset stomach. That collection also had another great story come to think of it: "The Long Walk"...

King would probably say that 'Rage' was the more embarrassing of his early novels. 'The Running Man' comes from that time, too--and has very little to do with the Schawarzenegger movie, othter than there is a character named Ben Richards who is in a game show to be hunted down for bounty.

I think the movie will be fine. Obviously its a pretty straight-forward story, and pretty simplified. If you like the book, its tough to see how Darabont can screw it up. I just hope the effects aren't too cheap. This was a super-fast shoot and a short production time. I'm not expecting LOTR or SW Prequal quality effects, but it had better be o.k.
