The National - Boxer

(7874 Points, 81 Votes, 11 #1 Votes)

US Chart Position
: #68

UK Chart Position: n/a

Charting Singles: n/a

Acclaimed music Ranking: #5 of 2007

SOMB Says: The National are a fascinating band. They dealt with the unfortunate situation of having their album Alligator labeled as a “grower” when the reality was people were just slow to discover it. They opened for a much hyped and much crappy band like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and blew them off the stage each time out. And in 2007 they dropped Boxer. A phenomenal follow up after the much acclaimed Alligator. They held nothing back. Boxer is a perfect balance of tension, frustration and patience. It is the sound of not being able to separate your cube life from your personal life. The sound of walking through the city at night with the intention of going somewhere but never quite getting there. Your friends no longer recognize you. You’re only half awake. You hold your stereo for hours. Boxer is an album that begs to be hurried home to. Played again and again. - Nick

Ranked Highest By: The Good Dr Bill, tennisclay, thresholdofrevelation, The Sheck, boyo, b*derty, tweed, Hans Christian Anderson, Mittens, thundering boredom, maladroite (#1)

When I read people's EOY lists that rip on Spoon or The National I just laugh and move on to the next stupid comment.

Radiohead's placement on this list = the ultimate example of voting for the band, not the album

Other than LCD, which is coming up soon the list ended at #7 for me. In my mind #7=#1. That makes Burial #4 guys!

Result!

The weird thing about both the National and Radiohead is that I can't imagine getting EXCITED over their music. At least with LCD Soundsystem, although I think the album is uneven, there's some drive and kick to it and it's not some dirgey mopecore.

The National: the new M. Ward of the somb eoy list?

I think the difference would be that people (me, at least) saw M. Ward coming as the #1. The National would be a real shock to a lot of people.

didnt really get m ward and it surprised me and i felt it surprised a lot of people

I will never get Spoon the way so many other people have. Oh well.

Was discussing this with a friend of mine earlier today. Just a headscratcher.

No, it'll be stupid, and we're already doing something stupid.

Damo Suzuki: So, um, yeah. Getting older isn't as bad as it sounds. Better than being young & poor (DjDrake) or young & slutty (SG) or young, poor and slutty (Paves); am I right?

Alright, my friends. It's time for another solid little rock jam
