Your problem is that you think You Could Have It So Much Better isn't a ridiculously great album.
I listened to it 150+ times, I should know.

same here. You Could Have It... is great
I'm with them....far better then the S/T for the simple reason that there's some diversity in the tracks. The S/T always seemed to be too much of the same thing to me.

I'm with them....far better then the S/T for the simple reason that there's some diversity in the tracks. The S/T always seemed to be too much of the same thing to me.
What it lacks is that loud/soft dynamic and the intimacy of the s/t. The lo-fi crunch on the s/t is undeniably endearing, hell, that's why The Strokes used it twice. As a result, when they made the jump to the full sound on their third album, they hit some growing pains. Franz did it immediately and got that potential problem out of the way.
