I think a case can be made, two albums into their respective careers, that The Rakes have the better body of work. Sure, Franz's s/t is the best of the lot, but BOTH Rakes albums are very good, whereas Franz's sophomore record is putrid. Ten New Messages is quite underrated. Probably the strongest songs on an album that didn't make my EOY list. Too much filler, unfortunately. But "The World Was a Mess...," "We Dance Together," "Trouble," and "When Tom Cruise Cries" are all stellar.

Never was a huge FF fan, but Ten New Messages made #3 on my EOY list. 'Nuff said.

I thought Ten New Messages was awful but the debut was stronger than ychismbwFF. Both will bounce back a little with their 3rd album would be my thought. The cribs record this year was better than Rakes for me.

I really like both a lot. I think the Rakes are the best of the recent crop of London rock bands. Ten New Messages is great. The first three songs (and When T.C. Cries) are fantastic. But the first FF album is the best of all four records, by far. FF have a lot more range. I can't see the Rakes doing numbers like Hallem Foe or Eleanor Put Your Boots Back On. Come to think of it, the Rakes albums are more held up by a handful of great songs, where as FF albums are more "albumy."

I'm with them....far better then the S/T for the simple reason that there's some diversity in the tracks. The S/T always seemed to be too much of the same thing to me.

I'm with them....far better then the S/T for the simple reason that there's some diversity in the tracks. The S/T always seemed to be too much of the same thing to me.

What it lacks is that loud/soft dynamic and the intimacy of the s/t. The lo-fi crunch on the s/t is undeniably endearing, hell, that's why The Strokes used it twice. As a result, when they made the jump to the full sound on their third album, they hit some growing pains. Franz did it immediately and got that potential problem out of the way.

I don't want to get my hopes up so I will say I suspect Franz Ferdinand + Xenomania will end up being less than the sum of its parts. That Sound and Vision cover wasn't really anything

It's so embarrassing liking a band where if you go on their most active livejournal community to find presale passwords or whatever all the posts are slash fan fiction. Not nearly as bad as when the Libertines were still around but jeez

"Turn It On" was a candidate for the last album, obviously they decided to hold it back for a reason other than quality.
