What instrument makes the sound similar to a rattlesnake?
I believe it's used at the beginning of Aerosmith's Sweet Emotion, in Wilson Pickett's Engine # 9, and in one of Cake's songs that I can't remember the name of (yeah, I know that helps a lot, huh?).
I think it might be this, but I'm not 100% sure:

This has been bugging me a little bit. I have done a lot of searches on the internet and still can't seem to definatively find the answer.

I initially thought maracca [sic]. But the Aerosmith clue has got me leaning toward the vibraslap (also featured on "Crazy Train").
Vibraslap
Yes, I think that's it. I don't know why I didn't remember the beginning of Crazy Train has it also. Thanks. I do believe Seamus got it right first.
Listen here. It's the sound 5 seconds into this clip and then again at approx 13 and 19 seconds.

You guys are forgetting the crucial vibraslap- opening of Ozzy's "Crazy Train"
Check it again, check-check-check it again. I was all over the "Crazy Train" vibraslap in my first post. That extended time off is getting to you.
I would like to thank whatever powers that be which have acquiesced so that we may have a thread devoted to the vibraslap...thank you!
