Out next week. Seems right up the SOMB alley, so I figured I'd start a thread on it. The Flaming Lips comparisons are inevitable- they're from Norman, OK, and sing about skeletons, brain alteration, car crashes, and suicide.

Quick, cheap comparison: Think a cross of Hit To Death In The Future Head with, say, the hazy reverb Once We Were Trees by Beachwood Sparks (or even At Dawn by MMJ.)

Listen to the entire thing at myspace.com/evangelicals

or just take it here.

On a side note, they're on the rising Dead Oceans label, who released Dirty Projectors and Phosphorescent last year, and will release The Explorers Club debut later in '08. The latter, I'm dying for.

there are some pretty good songs on this album, decent overall, still, I lose interest after a few songs through.

Auburn?

15 years ago, when I was in High School, a friend of mine, two years my senior, invited me and a buddy down to visit him at Auburn. He was a freshman, pledging. He took us to a frat house for a party, where Man or Astroman? played with a band called Hooker.

Hooker wore tight bike pants, mullets, and football jerseys. The singer stepped up to the mic and yelled, "This is a song called... TUSH!!" They played hair metal cover of ZZ Top. So, yeah, Hooker.

Pretty good. I liked their first album but this one is better. The songs still blur into each other (and themselves) but they have a lot of promise . . . they sort of remind me of a young version of the Flaming Lips.

bumping this thread because i listened to this album about four times today, and it is just getting better everytime.

I can definitely hear the At Dawn comparisons on Skeleton Man and Paperback Suicide, which are probably my favorites right now.

Bellawood deserves it's own thread, what a strange song. It's like if Radiohead wrote Paranoid Android in a fever dream in a morgue instead of a grocery store or wherever.

Love this guy's voice.

The Explorers Club debut

Yeah, I really want to hear this too. I keep submitting their name to my University's UPC to get them, because it would be so easy to since they are from the same region and haven't had enough success to turn their nose up at a public university headlining show hopefully.

We got the actual beach boys a few years ago and it was a big hit, why not get these guys for a lot cheaper now? My school doesn't think this way, though..
