Anyone else heard of the Beachwood Sparks? I just discovered their 1st s/t album and like it. The album has a good deal of psychedelic and west coast country influence mixed with rock. Just imagine the Eagles if they took more drugs and were on subpop.

Unfortunately it looks like they have broke up. They're last album was in 2002. I'm just discovering them now though.

Love the band.

Their Make the Cowboy Robots Cry EP from 2002 was their last release. I commented on their MySpace a few months back and apparently it was glowing enough to garner a message to be sent to me - it was vague, but seemed to imply that they might be reuniting in 2008. Doubtful, I know, but I'll hang on to that sliver of hope.

If you're new to Beachwood Sparks, you're probably not familiar with The Tyde either. They're definitely the most successful by-product of the group and have released three solid albums. It's also worth checking out out their wiki to find some of the other connections. Good music all around.

Thanks. I'll be on the lookout for The Tyde.

If anyone knows any other bands that sound similar post away.

Did anyone mention their name is a take on The Zombies' Beachwood Park from Odyssey & Oracle? Now there's a song I gotta here right now.

How about the Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers or any other Gram Parsons project? Then you could ignore bands like Beachwood Sparks and The Tyde.

Balls...not a smart tone to your statement. You do realize there's plenty of us who are well aware of the artists you speak.

Anyway, I always thought The Thrills had a similar sound to Beachwood Sparks.

Jimi Hey, former drummer/bassist for Beachwood Sparks was in Olson's band on his most recent tour.
Every Sunday morning I wake up
I see you by your dresser doing your make-up
Fluttering a Chinese fan in a Knoxville fashion
All last night you tossed and turned
Your body was hotter than the night Richmond burned
You say you had a bad nightmare about tractor trailers crashing

Thanks for the suggestions. I didn't know about the Zombies reference regarding their name. I am aware of the Byrds, some Sparklehorse, some Flying Burrito Brothers, not too much of the Jayhawks and none of the Thrills I'll have to give them a listen when I can.

No harsh tone or assumption intended, simply a statement that if the original poster gave the Parsons et al records a listen, disposable bands like the ones referenced would no longer be that useful to him.

Two other related bands worth checking out are Further and the Summer Hits. Both featured brothers Brent and Darren Rademaker, who would go on to form the Beachwood Sparks and the Tyde, respectively. Further was often marginalized as little more than a post-Pavement/GBV lo-fi band, but even then the Rademakers' songwriting skills were top-notch--I recommend the EP Grimes Golden as a place to start. On the other hand, the Summer Hits remain one of my favorite bands of all time. The Rademakers were essentially sidemen this time around, with the spotlight on the enigmatic Tartarex, a drug-addled surfer freak channeling garage rock, West Coast psychedelia and shoegazing--total fuckin' godhead. Their singles are collected on a CD called Beaches and Canyons and I can't recommend it highly enough.
