"Evil Urges"

Get excited here. Easily my most anticipated record of 2008.

Anyone know anything more this, ie who's producing, band personnel or label changes?

Word.

Where did I read that they're recording this in the city this time instead of out in the country? Wonder if that effects the album at all?

Easily my most (only) anticipated of 08 too. I only hope rumors that it is heavily "gospel" influenced was just Jim's typically cryptic attempts at humor/misdirection. I want more big fucking rock. If he manages to top "Dondante" that will be one impressive feat.

interesting.

also interesting.

i had not heard either of these bits of info. can't say i'm terrified of a city-recorded or gospel-influenced MMJ record. in fact, i'd kinda welcome both of those changes of pace.

one other thing. evil urges comes out June 10th.

I am very very excited for this. More than anything, I just want to see them live again. Between August 06 and August 07 I saw them three times (albeit two of those were at Lollapalooza) and I feel like a junkie every time I go listen to some bootlegs or the live album. Even though I enjoy their originals, I would love to see them do a covers album sometime. "Move On Up" at Lolla this summer was awesome and just off the top of my head I can think of their great versions of "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man," "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You" which they do Rolling Thunder Revue style, "Careless Whisper," "It Makes No Difference," "Celebration," "Wonderful Tonight," "All Night Long," and "A Quick One While He's Away" that they all just destroy on.

Don't forget "Tyrone"...though I've seen 'em 3 times and they haven't played it.

wow. i had no idea they covered all those songs. the only time i've seen them do a cover was w/ eddie vedder when they opened for pearl jam in grand rapids (it makes no difference). it kicked ass. yeah, MMJ is great live, but their studio albums are just as solid. genius band.

I saw them do it. It was just Jim James and a little stringed harp-y kind of thing. Really cool.

Not having been into these guys for that long - this is the first time I've actually had to wait for anything from MMJ. The suspense is killing me.

I can't imagine what it would've been like having to wait for Z. Reports of a hip-hop influence, knowing that John Leckie was in the studio with them... and then for them to deliver an album so fucking incredible... that would've been the absolute balls.

Needless to say - the reports of the gospel influence have got me more than a little excited. Can't wait...

Yes, in the time since Z, James has been in so many great projects. He's certainly set to jump to a larger arena.

My personal favourite is At Dawn but I'm sure you'll get people telling you to check out It Still Moves or Z (possibly the best starting point since it's the most diverse and has "Off the Record" on it). Not too many people seem to be huge fans of the debut (watch, now someone will prove me wrong).

So, yeah, pick one at random and then acquire the others. Pretty sure you won't regret it.

I like the debut quite a lot, but, yeah, At Dawn rules. It's been downhill since then.
