can't remember if we've done this poll or not before, but i feel like this is one of the tougher questions to answer in rock history. i'm presently withholding my vote as i need to respin them both, but anyhow...

I'd go for Music From Big Pink, but they're both absolutely fantastic.

The self titled is totally great. One of my faves. I can't get into Big Pink at all for some reason, so I must be retarded.

This is just an impossible decision. I went with self-titled for now, if just because "Unfaithful Servant" keeps blowing me away lately. But Chest Fever is doing the same on the other end, and Whispering Pines, and Lonesome Suzie and..... etc etc. These two albums are both unbelievably good.

Such of tough choice, both are classics in my mind. This week I did an hour and half special on the Band on my radio show and my friend and I had this debate. my pick is Music From Big Pink. Lonesome Suzie is porbably one my fav all time songs

Big Pink easily; few things can match "Tears of Rage".
Aren't there any girls out their who like good music? I need to and want to meet them. My favorite bands are Overkill River, The Nife, Songs:Ohio, and Nuetral Milk Hotel. Please let me know if your into indy music and like to go to show's and drink beer's and makeout.

...and Whispering Pines

I know, I know...

but then I remembered "In A Station" - so I voted Big Pink. That Richard Manuel - he could sing the phone directory and break your heart with it.

Yeah, the more I listen to Big Pink, the more I'm convinced it's one of the greatest records of all the times. "The Weight" certainly is on the songs spectrum.

Indeed, one of the best polls yet.
So tough, and as much as I love The Weight, from day one I always preferred the self titled. And not because side two starts off shouting....

I'm not going to go that far, but I have a strong preference for self-titled and could never really get into Big Pink, other than "The Weight."

Both great and classic records, but one has "The Weight" and one doesn't. I pick the one that does.

The Band is definitely one of my favoite groups of all time; what a collection of singers and musicians. The way they blended thier voices together is so unique and beautiful, out of control and yet perfectly together. -- I'd choose the 2nd between the two albums.

Just started to read "This Wheel's on Fire" by Levon Helm with Stephen Davis, which tells the story of the Band. -- It said that at Richard Manuel's funeral Garth Hudson played "I Shall Be Released" which Bob Dylan had written for Richard to sing. Through all three verses there wasn't a dry eye in the church.

'I Shall Be Released' is my funeral song.

I've loved this song ever since it was used in Sean Penn's film, "The Indian Runner." A beautiful piece of music.
