Aside from those Johnny Cash recordings, have many older artists covered the work of younger artists? I want to exclude peers (Tegan & Sara covering The White Stripes doesn't count). I think this could be a short list and might involve a lot of joke covers. My contribution: Mr. Bungle - "Baby One More Time"

That's kind of a hard question. Nothing comes to mind immediately.

Television Personalities - "Mr. Brightside" Hall & Oates - "Someday We'll Know" Patti Smith - "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" harder to come up with than I thought
what does he file at the hall of records? a declaration of tortoise intent

yeah, nothing came to mind for me either, and it was a little depressing.

if it is in fact the case that many older artists don't cover younger artists, it begs the question: why the hell not?

a few potential answers:

1) artists, like most listeners, don't keep up with new music as they age and hence wouldn't know what songs to cover (most depressing answer but perhaps most accurate)
2) older artists don't want to cover younger artists because they want to play songs their fans will recognize and their fans don't keep up with new music (possibly accurate but only slightly less depressing than option 1)
3) Age-ism (a slightly less kind spin on option 1 -- "music sucks nowadays and kids don't know how to write classic songs")

I'm sure there are other possible explanations as well.

Along those same lines, Paul Anka's newest album has him covering "Mr. Brightside."

there was, of course, springsteen covering "keep the car running" live. but that was also with win and régine and, well, that's essentially arcade fire's stab at a springsteen song anyway.

and tom jones covered "burning down the house" a few years ago. i think the cardigans backed him or maybe it was actually the cardigans featuring tom jones.

One of the most popular that I can remember in recent history is Johnny Cash's cover of NIN's "Hurt," which I think is incredibly powerful. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned it. I also quite like his version of "Personal Jesus." I'm curious which of these covers people think is better. And actually, I'm wondering if anybody likes these more than the originals. Any thoughts? This could make for a lively discussion. Here's the video for "Hurt" in case nobody's seen it. I find it emotionally devastating. <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.c...>
