A thread for the fringe pocket of the somb who's fish stray from the school.

John Zorn -- The Dreamers
Posted Image
John Zorn puts down the sax and leads his core group of musicians. The result is a playful romp of psychedelic surf guitar and poppy exotica. Don't expect your head to be melted by drill bit speed saxaphone; you won't find even the shadow of a Naked City around the corner of any of these tunes. Quite the contrary, this is a laid back trip to some place nice and clean.

Ulaan Khol -- I

This is a special guitar psych record with the emphasis on the guitar. It's loud as fuck but not in the modern Sunn))0/Boris way. The wall of noise created by this guy harkens back to early Spacemen 3 jams or Flying Saucer Attack records. Pretty good stuff.

Toumani Diabate -- The Mande Variations
Posted Image
Pretty much my favorite release this year so far, with the exception of that Earth album I think. I'd heard Boulevard De'l Independence and liked it but was not prepared for the delicate sounds of this solo joint. His Kora sounds like a mellow harp with nylon string as opposed to the harsher metallic. Anyway, great album deserves to be heard.

Thanks for the Zorn. Haven't heard that, but I'm definitely behind you with the other two. I like that the Diabate is nothing but raw kora.

Thanks for the Toumani Diabate. His album with Ballake Sissoko New Ancient Strings is pure kora deliciousness, so anything in the same vein should be very nice.

lol at the New Grass comment good one pink, this is kind of a new grassy thread

I don't mean obscure as in 'stump the somb' I know you guys are up with it musically. I mostly just want to up some stuff that I love from 2008 but would probably only get one or two replies if I made a thread of each of them. I made a thread of that Ulaan Khol disc and no one responded. And I don't think it's because the 'album sucks.' Putting them all together may get more of them noticed. It'll maybe serve as a focal point for the lesser noticed avante stuff that comes out and sometimes flies under the radar.

Like that new Valet record Plastic posted a week back. It got no recognition here but it's great IMO.

Duane Pitre Pilotram Ensemble -- Organized
Pitches Occurring in Time

Posted Image
Near perfect minimalist drone piece. Listen to the "Ensemble Chord" on his myspace page if you want to know what you're getting into here. Slowwww.....nearly imperceptible shifts of glacially cold strings. It'll either sound like the orchestra warming up before the main event, or a sonic conveyance to your third eye. If it's the former then download and be merry. A late 2007 release but who's counting?

this Zorn is nice. I'm a big fan of M. Ribot and vibraphone, and there's boatloads of both here. Cute album cover to boot.

That's the first I've heard of this. Are you sure you aren't mixing him with Andy Palacio?

I've really been enjoying it too. It's sophisticatedly done but doesn't take itself seriously in the least. He does a good job with that.

Terry Riley -- The Cusp of Magic
Posted Image
This is an enchanting record. I'll steal the review from AMG because it is very succinct:
"For Terry Riley's 70th birthday, the Kronos Quartet commissioned him to write a piece for them, and he decided to include pipa player Wu Man (who also sings), as well as drum, rattle, various toys, and synthesizer. It's the most eclectic piece Riley has written for Kronos; he outdoes himself in the number of world music traditions, Western styles, and eccentric instruments he incorporates into The Cusp of Magic, whose title refers to the summer solstice. Each of its six movements has a program associated with it, and the outer movements are evocations of sacred Native American peyote rituals. The hallucinogenic, kaleidoscopically overlapping, and evolving soundscapes spill out into all the movements, which are musically differentiated, but which are all full of startling, serendipitous juxtapositions and sonic confrontations. In spite of its extreme eclecticism, each movement, as well as the piece as a whole, has an integrality and purposefulness that never seem random; the listener is clearly in the hands of a composer who's fully in control of the situation. Riley's harmonic language is largely tonal, and for the listener attuned to his aesthetic, the music is by turns powerful, evocative, spooky, and just plain lovely. It goes without saying that the Kronos Quartet and Wu Man throw themselves wholeheartedly into Riley's music, playing (and singing) with real authority and passion. Nonesuch's sound is clean and lively, with a great sense of presence."

Did Andy Palacio die?

Edit: Holy shit, I just googled him and he did. Damn. Saw him last summer at the Montreal azz Festival and was hoping to see him again this summer. Anyone who hasn't heard his 2007 release needs to do so now. Sad news, indeed.

Nice bowl of Crunchy Nut you got here, pretty expensive as I recall.
