John Zorn -- The Dreamers

John Zorn puts down the sax and leads his core group of musicians. The result is a playful romp of psychedelic surf guitar and poppy exotica. Don't expect your head to be melted by drill bit speed saxaphone; you won't find even the shadow of a Naked City around the corner of any of these tunes. Quite the contrary, this is a laid back trip to some place nice and clean.

Ulaan Khol -- I

This is a special guitar psych record with the emphasis on the guitar. It's loud as fuck but not in the modern Sunn))0/Boris way. The wall of noise created by this guy harkens back to early Spacemen 3 jams or Flying Saucer Attack records. Pretty good stuff.

Toumani Diabate -- The Mande Variations

Pretty much my favorite release this year so far, with the exception of that Earth album I think. I'd heard Boulevard De'l Independence and liked it but was not prepared for the delicate sounds of this solo joint. His Kora sounds like a mellow harp with nylon string as opposed to the harsher metallic. Anyway, great album deserves to be heard.
