sisqo - 'thong song'. most under-rated single of the year, people fail to look beyond the mentions of thongs to the awesomeness within (like thongs aren't awesome in the right circumstances anyway). the arrangement is fantastic, with its violins-n-2step beats making it sound like a sunnier uk garage. then there's the 4/4 switch, the orchestral swell and the singer's own passion about the subject: 'i don't think ya heeeeeard me!'
mercury rev - 'a drop in time'. there was another song i described like this (ah yeah, the alphabeat one), but it's like what if disney wasn't evil. everything about this is stunning, which is odd because my fave song on the album always used to be the first track. not sure when that changed, but i'm glad it did, because this is proper the best. again it's a case of amazing build, with a pop arrangement of a lushness i've not heard since 'and in every home'
elvis costello and the attractions - 'and in every home'. hey, why not. it's got a pop arrangement of a lushness unrivalled til 2001 when some song came out. actually, it's not so much the lushness as the complexity, with an orchestral backing that changes with almost every line. it's amazing, and actually the theme tune of desperate housewives (the proper one, not the stunted ragedy the tv show gets now) reminds me of it. elfman rules
mos def and pharoahe monch feat. nate dogg - 'oh no'. i loved this when it came out and i still do. my second favourite nate track, it actually also has worthwhile contributions from the others. especially like monch's 'huh, hallelujah, pharoahe monch'll do ya / maintain the same frame of mind - screw ya!'.
thin lizzy - 'cowboy song'. i had heard this before last night, but not properly. so i stuck on side 3 of live and dangerous, and was blown away. so many things to love. the slow intro, the awesome kick-in, and just the fact that it rules. it sounds so... 3d on vinyl too! and itr segues seamlessly into 'the boys are back in town', which just makes things even better. especially when one considers the stunning rising guitar harmonies near the end of the song.
iron maiden - 'the evil that men do'. not off one of the last two maiden albums i got on 12, but from the one i got before them. was actually inspired to get it in when i heard the track trailing some programme on e4. think it was that one where some jabroni becomes friend with a leather-skinned devil and gets super powers. anyway, album rules and this is my favourite song off it. album got to #1 in the charts. fuck yeah
god, how many's that? 6? bollocks. ok, 'all i know is tonight' by jaga, 'goretex weather report' by shining, 'homewrecker' by converge and 'jupiter' by cave in.
there.

I see you by your dresser doing your make-up
Fluttering a Chinese fan in a Knoxville fashion
All last night you tossed and turned
Your body was hotter than the night Richmond burned
You say you had a bad nightmare about tractor trailers crashing - The Felice Brothers
