We had a small thread on Art Chicago 2007 last year, but I thought that I'd start a fresh one to remind you art-loving Chicagoans of this year's Artropolis event at the Merchandise Mart. It runs Friday April 25 through Monday April 28, with an invite/donor preview night on Thursday. As with last year, Artropolis not includes Art Chicago, but the NEXT Invitational Exhibition of Emerging Art, The Merchandise Mart International Antiques Fair, The Artist Project independent artists exhibition, and The Intuit Show of Folk and Outsider Art (a personal favorite). You can lose yourself for hours and hours on exhibition floors equal to one half city block. So come on out, Chicago SOMB people! Feed your head and feast your eyes on all sorts of visual arts, new and old. I'll probably be there on Saturday.

And post favorites and discoveries in this thread too!

Trying to rally some troops. I'll be going though.

No, it'll be stupid, and we're already doing something stupid.

Sometimes I wonder why I bother paying to live near a major metropolitan area when I never attend things like this.

I AM STOKED. EVERYONE GO TO THIS.

Bump Chicago SOMBies. It's chilly, blustery and gray, and it's supposed to rain later. What better day to spend inside, and what better way to spend it inside than looking at beautiful and cool and bizarre paintings and pictures?

I was there for about 5 1/2 hours yesterday, and barely scratched the surface, missing about 1/2 of Art Chicago and all of the Antiques Fair. My advice for time management is to head straight for the eighth floor, and do The Artist Project and Intuit show galleries. There seemed to be a bigger bang and hit/miss ratio. Also, a lot of local artists and more affordable pieces (meaning less than $500). The NEXT galleries on the seventh floor were also a big hit.

Some highlights:
Seeing original pieces from "autistic savant" Gregory Blackstock in the Garde-Rail gallery at the Intuit show. I have this book, and like it lots:

Also at Intuit, Lindsay Gallery with Bill Miller and Harry Underwood.

How have I missed Checkered House before? Especially Theresa Disney and Tres Taylor.

For the Artist Project galleries, I'm sure some of you know of and have heard of
Deborah Maris Lader
Gabe Lanza
Anastasia Mak
Zsofia Otvos
Guillermo Munro

The music lovers here may be taken with the collage of painting and manipulated vinyl of Katherine Kisa:

Most amazing thing I saw at Forum Gallery in Art Chicago, not this work, but something similar, the photo-realism movie theater painting of Davis Cone:

Thanks for reminding me about Davis Cone's stuff... unreal. I saw one in person and stared at it for probably 10 minutes.

Gabe Lanza's page has a link to a free pass if anyone's interested:

I'm really bummed to be missing it.
