Word. This is a great, great, great power pop record. Unfortunately it helped open the floodgates for every bland Dishwalla and Deep Blue Something out there and unfortunately suffers through association. All I know is that I saw them open for Toad in fall 92 (before they had any promotion at all) and went to the record store first thing next morning (mine had the original album cover) to get it. Fucking classic it is.

So what's the deal...the main songwriter killed himself after New Miserable Experience and that's why the band has sucked since then?

I think the guy who wrote "Hey Jealousy" was kicked out right before it wen't huge. Not sure if he wrote all the songs or if he died. Still reason to be pissed.

I'd consider going if it wasn't twenty-five bucks. I walked out on a free GB show at one of the northwest suburban street fests last fall. I don't blame the band, though. Sound system couldn't stand up to the location/wind, mix was shrill/terrible, and one of the guitarists was out of tune, which I suspect was due to not being able to hear himself. They were great at a similar fest in Bartlett a few years ago. These guys are married to the 'burbs.

from All Music:

New Miserable Experience and its singles dominated radio and MTV for the following year — "Hey Jealousy" and "Found Out About You," both penned by Hopkins, were in heavy radio rotation nearly a year after their initial release — pushing the sales of their debut album to over one million copies.

However, all was not well. Hopkins' battle with alcoholism and depression had taken its toll on the band during the sessions for New Miserable Experience, and he was fired shortly after the record's release, with guitarist Scott Johnson taking his place. Speculation abounded as to whether the band would be able to maintain their success without Hopkins' melancholy songwriting voice. Tragically, on December 5, 1993, Hopkins shot and killed himself, even as the songs he had written were blanketing the airwaves.

I'm including "Mrs. Rita." Hell, I'm even including "Until I Fall Away" to get to six. ("Hey Jealousy," "Allison Road," "Pieces of the Night," and "Found Out About You" making up the rest of the six.)

Come to think of it, what's your seventh?

Yeah, i'd swap it for "Until I Fall Away," which marked the beginning of their VH1 leanings.

hey now, Dishwalla had some great stuff. They were the victims of releasing an album during a label shake up and got no promotion (2nd album after Counting Blue Cars)

but yeahz
New Miserable Experience rocks

anyone know if Gas Giants was ever worth getting? the single was good

"After much thought into this, I have finally come to a conclusion as to why the ‘Meet the Spartans’ commercial is so funny:

It is an interesting choice to have Sanjaya sing ‘I’m not gay,’ as his final words on earth. As he is plummeting into a seemingly bottomless pit, he does not say ‘dear god no,’ ‘I love you mom,’ or even simply ‘argh.’ He instead takes the moment to reaffirm to the world, in spite of their doubts, that he is not a homosexual. Not only that, but he continues to sing, despite falling to his certain death. The distinct lack of plausibility of this situation is what produces giggles from our mouth. It is the antithesis to the belief that ‘it’s funny because it is true.’

classic record; high school and broken hearts
"Arcade Fire. They're less sincere. I buy that Vampire Weekend are Ivy League yuppies. Their music is WASP folk. Arcade Fire look as real as Civil War re-enactors and come off as aloof, arrogant drama students." --brent D.
