First, there's this interview published on June 6th, where Andrew Goldstein asks him some stupid questions (as a joke, perhaps? not familiar with Goldstein):

Goldstein: Sirius's impending merger with XM is anticipated to boost earnings. Do you own any stock in the company?
Reed: What are you, a fucking asshole? I'm here telling you the truth about music and you want to know if I have stock in the fucking radio? You fucking piece of shit. What did I do to deserve that?
Goldstein: Moving on. You've got a film out, you've got your radio show, you've got a new book of photography coming up — is there a new album in the works?
Reed: No. Nothing I feel like talking about. Good-bye.
Then this back in Feb. 13, when a different writer saw Reed at a benefit performance of "Macbeth" (the one with Patrick Stewart, which has gotten rave reviews)

As he stood to leave, we finally worked up the courage to approach him. How did he like the play? "It was worth the price of admission just to hear him speak, 'Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow,'" he said. "I'd been waiting to see how he would do it, and it was just magnificent." Then Lou Reed turned to us and grinned, and recited:
Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow,
Creeps in this petty pace from day to day,
To the last syllable of recorded time;
And all our yesterdays have lighted fools
The way to dusty death.
We had to grip the rail of the stairwell to stay standing. We attempted to maintain small talk. Did he have trouble getting there in the weather? "Everybody did." What did he like about Stewart's interpretation? "Please don't do this to me." And then he was gone.

Agree with the first part.This guy is the biggest, most self important douche in music, and he has only a few good songs to show for it. What a douche.
It's nice to see that he's turned his asshole personae into a shtick.

What, and Roger Waters is all sweetness and light with not a single drop of smugness in him? Oh yeah, that's right - the crappy opera he did was in no way a vanity project.
Lou's a god, and if not wanting to answer inane questions from retarded interviewers makes him a douche then wow.

What makes you say that and are you including entire careers (bands and solo)? Because saying Waters is 100 x's more talented than Reed might be a pretty non-sensical statement. Lou Reed single handedly changed the trajectory of music in the Velvet Underground and again in his solo career.
I am a huge fan of Waters, but your rail against Reed has little merit and makes little sense. Comparing the ultimate underground artist to the ultimate arena rock artist is apples and orange anyway.

Of course he did. But also in terms of lyrics, studio innovation and live innovation. His band was pumping out tunes like See Emily Play and Arnold Layne before the Beatles even released Sgt. Peppers. He's also a top five rock lyricist, period:

Lou Reed is a terrible artist known for one song. There's nothing even remotely colorful about anything he does. His music flat out sucks ass, even more pretentious than beatnik poetry. His lyrical indulgences make Jim Morrison seem like Hemmingway.

Dude, any Floyd prior to Dark Side doesn't stand up to anything from the Velvet Underground. Quite simply put: the Velvet Underground totally blow away the crap, over-rated junk in the early years of Floyd. IMO. Barrett is so dated and over-rated. Very "self indulgent". Really only interesting to people on heavy acid. I can't even listen to it for the most part.
Barrett is not fit to wash Lou Reed's undershorts, frankly. And, Waters really didn't do much of merit until the 70s.

As I was driving to my home tonight (in the country, incidentally), I was listening to Lou Reed's "Heavenly Arms"--and getting choked up at its beauty.

Eh. I really don't like early Floyd that much. Barrett was hokey, IMO. Very dated. Very over-rated. Quite the opposite of the timeless genius of the Velvet Underground.
And, I like Floyd. I have all their shit. But, until they got older, and that jazz influence came into the mix, and even before that in the Dark Side era: Floyd was only great post Dark Side.
Look at it this way. If Floyd never makes Dark Side, and break up in '71. They really wouldn't even be very well known right now. If Lou Reed never put out a single solo record: Velvet Underground would be considered one of the greatest bands in rock history today. That's a fact.
