Fans?..I love this band at times and have a feeling these new albums are gonna break them through a little more. The material on these could be THAT good. The live stuff and everything I've read and heard about this new stuff sounds like it could be a level up, and DUST OF RETREAT was a pretty good record itself.

New albums info from their myspace blog:

"Animal!" and ’not animal’ release dates

Finally...

On October 7th, Epic will release "Animal!", the record we have been working on for two years on double vinyl and digital download. They will also be releasing "not animal", a collection of songs that the label likes, on digital and cd.

On July 29th, they will be releasing an ep of 'live to two track' recordings done at daytrotter.

Tracklists....

"animal!"
1. At the carnival
2. O' what a nightmare!
3. Hello Vagina
4. I am a lightning rod
5. Love song for a Schubas bartender
6. Mariel's brazen overture
7. There's talk of mineshafts
8.A children's crusade on acid
9. German motor car
10. Cold, kind, and lemon eyes
11. My baby (shoots her mouth off)
12. As tall as cliffs

"Daytrotter EP"
1. Bookworm
2. My baby shoots her mouth off
3. Broadripple
4. love song for a schubas bartender
5. i am a lightning rod

"not animal" not in order
The shivers (I've got 'em)
German Motor Car
pages written on a wall
hip hip hooray
broadripple is burning!
a children crusade on acid
cold, kind, and lemon eyes
as tall as cliffs
the ocean (is bleeding salt)
Real Naked Girls
hello vagina
holy cow!

as someone who LOVED Retreat... i gotta say i was totally let down by the new stuff they played at Red Rocks last fall... like, it was quite bad actually. here's hoping this EP proves my initial thoughts wrong

This is a band where I hate their name so much that I can't stand seeing it on my iPod. Makes me think of Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. The last album sat there being unfairly ignored and inducing shudders until I removed it without much more than a cursory listen.

I'm excited in ways I probably cannot describe in text to hear the new stuff; the live bootlegs on youtube are excellent, if a bit weirder. What this arrangement goes to show in a lot of ways is a big reason not to sign to a major label. Epic was not their only offer, I'm sure, considering how fantastic Dust of Retreat was, and I'm pretty sure that big indie labels have all the effective resources of the big players like Epic and Island and Capitol, except they won't mess with your music; granted, it probably takes longer to climb up the charts, but if the music is good enough, it will get there. In an extreme case, look at the Arcade Fire, who got huge, and not because Merge has huge resources to market them. At the same time, I'm excited, largely because there will be a bunch of new songs on the "Not Animal" disc that we probably wouldn't hear otherwise. If they are, in fact, excellent (like much of Margot's released material), I guess it's a win for anyone who likes music.

I'm pretty much making the same post as Solace, I enjoyed 'Retreat', but am as of yet unsure of this new material. Still, I'm holding off judgment, and am cautiously looking forward to this one. I think this thread may inspire me to to put on some 'Dust'...

anyone interested: 3 new songs have been put on their myspace, 2 from ANIMAL!,"A Children's Crusade" and "I am a Lightining Rod" and 1 from both "As Tall As Cliffs." I guess my impressions of them are good, but different. There's this dreamy, wind-blowing effect in all of them.

So I figure one of those, or both, will leak soon. ?

Indeed. Unless I'm out of the loop and it has, I can't believe it hasn't at this point.

and here's a bolachas link for animal.

i really didn't care for not animal!, to the point that it bored me enough to warrant the recycle bin after one listen. animal!, on the other hand, is sounding pretty darn good so far. funny that.

I need to play it more, but actually I'm kind of feeling the opposite. The last 4 tracks on NOT ANIMAL have great energy, whereas ANIMAL! there are not too many like songs such as "Quiet As a Mouse" or "Skeleton Key"..other than perhaps the closing cut "As Tall As Cliffs"

I'm gonna have to spend more time with both. ANIMAL! seems to be more methodical, thematic, and paced...I suppose the idea of listening to music like you might watch a Woody Allen film..that's 1 way the band describes their music anyway.

i thought the not animal songs were formless and unmelodic, which for whatever energy, just didn't connect at all. the second half of animal starts to get a little bland, but i'm willing to give it a few more spins before i come to a real opinion about it.

well there's 5 songs that are on both..but in just 1 time hearing it, there weren't any songs on ANIMAL! that caught my attention the way "Pages Written on the Wall" "The Shivers (I've Got 'Em)" and "The Ocean (Is Bleeding Salt)" did. Every one of those songs have a hook. Also "As Tall As Cliffs" comes right before those 3 on N.A. so it really gives the 2nd half of the album a flow.

I do like the songs on ANIMAL!..it's just they remind me in some ways of a lot of the new Marillion album's songs..they start out slow and eventually find a wall-of-sound and build to something good. But they don't seem to be as in your face. "Lightning Rod" is a song I've liked for awhile; and probably is the 1 song on the DAYTROTTER EP I go back to most.
