Doctor Who on Sci-Fi...beginning Friday night

Alright, people. I don't do this sort of thing, like, ever, but this is a great show.

Finally, one year after its debut in the UK and Canada, us Yanks can finally see the new Doctor Who series. If you ever watched the original, or even if you didn't like it because of the effects, crappy looking monsters, rock quarry sets, etc., give this a shot. Its really great.

I've already seen the series thanks to Bit Torrent, but I'll definitely DVR this and give it another watch-through.

Ask our British and Canadian friends. They know.

I hope the ratings do well on Sci-Fi so they can pick up the second series hopefully right after it airs in the UK (hopefully it should be starting up again soon). So far they've just committed to the Eccleston episodes. I'd like to NOT have to Bit Torrent this again, if possible. I only did the first time because it was the only way to see it.

Maybe if the ratings are really good they'll get the rights to air the original. I guess the BBC raised the price to some exorbitant rate years ago. That's why PBS stations in America have mostly stopped carrying it.

I remember a guy in my dorm in college used to watch Dr. Who. He raved about it. I could never understand the appeal. Always seemed really stupid to me.

15 April 2006 looks like the likely date for series 28. Not confirmed though.

It's the polar opposite of American SF. Humorous, silly but incoporating some of the best ideas Science fiction has ever had without hitting you over the head with it.

Revamped version. Better than the horrid 80's one, not as good as the orginal. Sounds better with the graphics.

Different arrangement, but yeah, basically. (On the old show, the theme had several different arrangements/different instrumentation, etc., but basically remained familiar. Same here.)

And, yeah, the old show TOTALLY looked crappy, seemed silly, etc. If you had that reaction, then you should absolutely give the new one a try. Its completely updated, has a budget, etc., yet retains the humor, ideas, etc. of the original.

And I think Sci Fi's deal is ONLY for the new. The BBC tried to tie the original/new series rights together, and that might have been why it took a fucking YEAR to come stateside.

(And...its only Series 28 if you factor in the 1963-1989 run. Considering the show was off the air for 15-plus years, its easier to consider the upcoming season Season Two of a new series. Also, the first 26 seasons were in the serialized format...the new series isn't...so I really think you can consider this a new series in many respects, though with the obvious ties to the original, such as K-9 and Sarah Jane Smith returning next season. But this is really "Doctor Who Volume 2" in many ways.)

I was going to post this! I know what I'm doing Friday night, and I'm going to try to tape it, too. This, along with the Hayao Miyazaki movies being shown on Cartoon Network on Saturday Nights, is going to kill my weekends.

Spirited Away this weekend (which is also being shown on TCM next Saturday), Princess Mononoke on March 25th, Castle in the Sky on April 1st, and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind on April 8th. All showings are at 7:30 PM EST.

What is it with SciFi, and many other cable channels, that when they get any new episodes of a show they show multiple episodes all at once, and then immediately show them again? SciFi's claiming they have a "Two Hour Premier" of the show, but what they're doing is showing 2 episodes, "Rose" & "The End of the World," twice to take up 2 hours.

Well, they're two one-hour (with commercials) episodes, so I guess its a "two-hour premiere" of sorts. Sci-Fi actually drives me nuts with their constant commercial breaks...I'm actually impressed that they will ONLY be running 15 minutes of ads! And...all the episodes are really good, but keep an eye out in particular for "Dalek," (Episode 6) and "The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances" (Episodes 9 & 10), my personal favorites, and probably the fan consensus favorites. "The Unquiet Dead" (Episode 3) is probably the most "traditionally Doctor Who-esque" of the lot (with a setting and plotline and aura not unlike the mid-70s Tom Baker era, only with better effects, of course), for those old-school fans who see the first two and wonder just what show it is they're watching!

Have you bought any of those ridiculously expensive DVD editions of the old series? The extras are quite good though. Commentaries on all of them. I'm waiting for Inferno. Maybe the best Dr Who story of all time.

Only "The Caves Of Androzani," because I had it signed at a convention. (Yes...I went to a convention. I'll say it before anyone: DORK!!!) The prices tend to dissaude me from buying too many...it bugs me that most of the BBC stuff released in the states on DVD tend to be so expensive. I've been finding some eps online, too.

Yeah..."Inferno" is a classic. Probably Pertwee's best story by a wide margin...though "Terror of the Autons" (the title villains, though not named, are the main villain in "Rose," the first ep of the new series) and "Day of the Daleks" are right up there in my book, too.

I've been a Who fan for years upon years now, hence my excitement over the new series. Actually, its because of the new series that I've been revisiting the old quite a bit, too.

I have Androzani as well. It's a male bloodbath. All the male characters die including the Doctor. I'm one of the few who really liked Trial of a Timelord as well.
