Do I have to vote for AC/DC twice? I am assuming yes: and same with Van Halen.

Just in case this is a serious question, no.

That list is like this bar in Bangkok that advertises itself as having 50 hot chicks and 1 ugly one. And that ugly one is a woman who can't sing, can't play guitar, and can't make it as a hot pop star despite contorting her body all over magazine spreads. Seriously, one of those does not belong with the others.

"After much thought into this, I have finally come to a conclusion as to why the ‘Meet the Spartans’ commercial is so funny:

It is an interesting choice to have Sanjaya sing ‘I’m not gay,’ as his final words on earth. As he is plummeting into a seemingly bottomless pit, he does not say ‘dear god no,’ ‘I love you mom,’ or even simply ‘argh.’ He instead takes the moment to reaffirm to the world, in spite of their doubts, that he is not a homosexual. Not only that, but he continues to sing, despite falling to his certain death. The distinct lack of plausibility of this situation is what produces giggles from our mouth. It is the antithesis to the belief that ‘it’s funny because it is true.’

If I loved Zeppelin in HS, but hate them now: should I rank them lower on the list or try to weigh my initial love for them? Hope this is not nitpicking...

Was this answered in the thread? I'm curious as well. How heavy should the nostalgia factor weigh in on a list...or is this a current favorites thing.

I think you should just list your favorites now. Not who you think should be ranked, or who you might have ranked 10 years ago.

All right, we're going to stick with the regular post or PM method. I kind of feel like no one is going to pay enough attention to all of the lists to figure out what the results will be. Anyway, I've got a couple of things up my sleeves in terms of posting the results that even if they are so predictable, it should still be entertaining. Also, re: what does favorite mean, your list basically should be the 50 bands you like the most on the day that you're submitting it. Basically it is up to you if you want to deal with the nostalgia issue. The only thing I'm going to say is that one shouldn't make their list based only who they think the "Best" artists are, and instead focus on the ones that bring them the most joy.

though it wouldn't officially be my 'favorite artists of all time' list as the thread title implies, I agree with your strategy

The "of all time" basically was meant to indicate that the artists weren't just coming from one decade or something like that.

36.) Phil Spector

Did he put anything out as an "artist." I mean I know that occasionally he's been featured in album titles, but isn't he always really just a producer? If so, does Rick Rubin qualify? Doesn't seem right.

If we can vote for Spector why not Quincy Jones or Goffin-King?
Nice bowl of Crunchy Nut you got here, pretty expensive as I recall.

i guess for me the difference between someone like rick rubin and phil spector is that spector didn't just produce records, he also wrote songs and occasionally would even sing/play on some of them. and also he has a discography on amg, as paul specified, whereas rubin doesn't edit: but yeah, this is pretty much paul's call

So I struggled with the "artists I love" v. "perceived quality of artist," and I really just tried to go straight love...so this is a pretty honest list with a bunch of entries that won't be anywhere on the final list. Oh well: 1) Ramones (2) 2) Monster Magnet (5) 3) Pogues (1) 4) Screeching Weasel (3) 5) Black Sabbath (1) 6) Stevie Wonder (1) 7) Van Halen (1) 8) The Queers (15) 9) BR5-49 (10) 10) New Bomb Turks (5) 11) Rocket From The Crypt (3) 12) Mr. T Experience (2) 13) Drive-By Truckers (5) 14) Dwight Yoakem (1) 15) The Specials (1) 16) AC/DC 17) Descendants (1) 18) Stooges 19) Public Enemy (1) 20) David Allan Coe (1) 21) Boogie Down Productions 22) Johnny Cash 23) Slayer (3) 24) Dropkick Murphys (10) 25) Dead Kennedys 26) Metallica (1) 27) Curtis Mayfield 28) Hank Williams 29) Bruce Springstein (1) 30) Faith No More 31) Ozzy Osbourne (1) 32) Jimmy Cliff 33) Andrew W.K. (6) 34) Weezer 35) Lynyrd Skynyrd 36) Buddy Holly 37) James Brown (1) 38) Black Flag 39) Oblivion (10) 40) Smoking Popes (5) 41) Sacred Reich (1) 42) Dirty Rotten Imbeciles (1) 43) Suicidal Tendencies 44) Queen 45) Mission of Burma (1) edit: for no good reason except I was curious, I put in parens the number of times I had seen the various artists.
