Taking a closer look, Bowie is the only one that shows on both of ours...I can't say that I like the Smiths (even though I have heard very little), but I found your list to be pretty cool in its diversity of artists that I think very few folks here would have ranked high or even thought of.

Specifically Cale/Reed- Songs for Drella, and the two Mermaid Avenue records by Billy Bragg and Wilco. Does a vote for Wilco cover that set? Does a vote for Bragg? or is it a third and separate "artist"?
Cale/Reed is the same as Lou Reed and Bragg/Wilco is the same as Billy Bragg. This is just going by the Allmusic listings where those albums are listed under those individual artist's discography. (You can still list them as Cale/Red or Billy Bragg and Wilco, though, and I'll put them in the right place)

so it's a AMG standard?..a lot of the Jazz stuff especially the line can be blurred. Pat Metheny for example, there's his Trio and then him as a solo artist which is his band.
I can deal with things like that on an individual basis. I put the rule in place mostly to clarify things like a vote for Ozzy Osbourne not being the same thing as a vote for Black Sabbath.

For me this list is hardly about the music at all. it's about that connection with the way the artist does things, from music on down. It's some kind of bizarre connection I tend to develop with artists. When it comes to these artists I'm completely blinded about what's good and what's not. I want it all:
1. Bob Dylan
Nobody fits my criteria better. He's the only artist I can think of that's so totally enrapturing that I'd just as well read an interview given by him as listen to any music by most any other artist. Also his career is so full and extended, half the time I think Love & Theft is better than Highway 61, and that blows my mind.
2. John Prine
He's a total addiction for me. If I'm happy, I want to hear Prine, if I'm sad, Prine, if I'm lonely or with friends or wanna jump around my room or sleep for hours, Prine is calling.
3. Sam Cooke
Probably the only "voice" I would say I'm in love with. It wouldn't matter if his songs were the worst ever written, I could listen all day. Luckily the songs are brilliant too so...
4. Van Morrison
Just read some Lester Bangs writing on this guy. He completely nails the feeling Van gives you. That life and death and all the world is encompassed in every moment, and we haven't got anything to grasp at but straws.
5. The Beatles
Along with Bob, it seems so pointless to put them on the top of any list. I'd have tried to put em lower but Abbey Road still melts right through me every time. Oh and there are not 6 greater albums than the White Album in the history of music. So there.
6. The Velvet Underground
7. Hank Williams
8. The Rolling Stones
9. The Ramones
10. Lou Reed
11. Elvis Costello
12. The Clash
13. The Stooges
14. The Flaming Lips
15. The Mekons
16. The Talking Heads
17. Neil Young
18. The Band
19. Led Zeppelin
20. The White Stripes
21. Randy Newman
22. Dwight Yoakam
23. The Everly Brothers
24. The Who
25. The Jackson 5
26. Akron/Family
27. The Magnetic Fields
28. Prince
29. Wilco
30. Green Day
31. The Supremes
32. David Bowie
33. The Beach Boys
34. They Might Be Giants
35. Nico
36. Belle & Sebastian
37. Elvis Presley
38. Frank Zappa
39. Andrew Bird
40. Lucinda Williams
41. Modest Mouse
42. Beck

44. R.E.M.
45. Weird Al Yankovic
46. The Zombies
47. Randy Travis
48. The Byrds
49. Creedence Clearwater Revival

Wanted to throw King Khan/Mark Sultan on here, been listening to them constantly. Couldn't figure out how best to do it though.

I still think blurbers should be required to up mixes of the artist. In order to get it done in a reasonable amount of time and to get more people to check out the mixes, I suggest they be 9 tracks each... or at a maximum under 1 hour.Paul, is there blurbing for this?

Dusty Springfield - Dusty in Memphis 8.5/10
Buddy & Julie Miller - Written in Chalk wow, first listen, but great great record! 9.3/10
Justin Townes Earle - Midnight at the Moviessurprisingly great, never picked up his past releases, but this one's knocking my socks off right away, 8.7/10
M. Ward - Hold Time 8.0/10
Neko Case -Middle Cyclone her best I've heard is my initial impression, but too soon to rate, haven't had a really good listen yet 7.8/10
