thanks yancy. don't let slackmo hear you say that though. He might get all angry and stuff.Great list, elco. We have like zero bands in common, but I like how you put personal faves above the obvious. And the blurbs are a nice touch. You're one of the few sombies I believe actually loves all the canon rock in his list as opposed to thinking he should love it.

How dare you. If my list won't be included in this poll, I have to challenge it. My personal criteria for favorite was 'flawless' and 'no qualms with.' Example: while I love Madonna and consider her a great, she has made music that is not up to the quality she can put out. She has done things as an 'artist' that aggravate me even though some of her work amazes me. So I would not include her in one of the golden slots.1. PJ Harvey
2. Antonín Dvořák
3. Public Image Ltd.
4. Béla Bartók
5. X

I answered the thread question, "Who are your favorite artists of all time?" Isn't it hard to rank after 10? I don't have 10 favorites of any one thing. I don't have 10 favorite shoe brands. I don't have ten 'favorite' candy bars. Favorite implies being discerning and selective, to me at least.

how dare you set up rules that I don't agree with and not count my vote. I hope your legal team is prepared for this "challenge." I mean this poll may wind up meaning nothing at all... oh wait...

What kind of heart for SOMB is this? I don't think it means nothing. It's a gauge of the overall taste of our little mini-society.I mean this poll may wind up meaning nothing at all... oh wait...

too obsessed with his current wife Allison Moorer –
can you blame the guy?
I'll spare everyone a picture of what steve looks like in comparison.
I first saw what Steve Earle looked like on The Wire and it was sorta surprising. I've never really seen/heard anything by Alison Moorer until now (and only knew of her as Shelby Lynne's sister) but good on Mr. Earle.

This was an issue for me, specifically with Metallica. I look and listen to them now and I just shake my head. Everything past the Black Album, and even kind of including that one, is just not for me at all. But Kill'em All - Ride the Lightning - Master of Puppets - And Justice for All are untouchable. Those were major records for me and my circle of mid-80s high school buddies, and nothing can discount them.
Interestingly enough, I did not feel that way about Radiohead. I've been so bored with everything post Kid A that even my love for Bends and OKC couldn't save them.
Also struggled with what to do about a band like Suede. I obsessed over their debut for years after it came out, but never got into any of their other albums. I surely spent more time loving that album than I did, say, Erykah Badu or Roxy Music, but the fact that my Suede love was limited to one album knocks them off. I mean, I really dug I Am A Bird Now but not enough to give them historical cred. One exception: Jesus & Mary Chain. Psychocandy is my all-time #1 and has been pretty much since 1985. I love Darklands, and I like Barbed Wire Kisses, but I feel like the rest of their albums are generic and milky.
Meanwhile, I'll never include a single Steely Dan album in my top 50 albums of all time, but there's no fucking with their string of 70s albums and as a band, I find myself listening to them all the time. It's just that I switch all over the place from Katy Lied to Pretzel Logic to Aja or whatever.

known, but all i really mean is i'm not voting for the entirety. if i vote for megadeth, it's not going after 1994, for maiden after 1988. like sabbath. every man and his dog votes for sabbath, but who liked technical ecstasy? the eternal idol? etcMy problem with Metallica goes much further back than St. Anger.
also: person who voted a perfect circle over tool. please tell me why as i am intrigued. apologies for not remembering who you are
