I went down to Omaha a few weeks ago to see the US swim trials and can't wait to see Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte dominate the world in men's swimming.

I'm hoping to actually see competitions, rather than puff pieces on athletes which seems to take the most time out of broadcast coverage. :blink: NBC is going all out this year, spreading the coverage over all of their network umbrella as well as online and mobile platforms (NBC, MSNBC, Oxygen, Telemundo, USA, CNBC, etc...)

It looks increasingly like a GB team will take place in 2012 as well now!

Not unless Isolus comes for a visit (OT joke specifically for Clem...you were right, it WAS a horrible episode...)

Being a little patriotic here, but it's all about the Aussies for me.

For a nation with only 20 million people, to finish fourth in the medal count (trailing only the USA, China and Russia) was pretty amazing and I think we can match that effort.

Obviously swimming is our strength, and with our women being the undisputed best in the world we should win plenty of gold. It isn't unforseeable for the Aussie girls to win at least 10 gold in the pool - based on times this year (but the Olympics always throws up surprises). But the men could surprise. Eamon Sullivan smashed the 50m Freestyle record three times earlier this year and nearly broke the 100m as well.

But it's all about this bloke - Grant Hackett;

Won his second straight 1500m Freestyle Gold Medal in Athens with a partially collapsed lung and a win in Beijing will mean he was able to do what Salnikov and Perkins never could - and that's win the 1500m three Olympics in a row. Broke the 800m freestyle Short-course world record on the weekend and he isn't even at meet fitness yet, so if he's 100% then it's going to get interesting.

But the Olympics always throw up the amazing. Like Hicham El Guerrouj not only winning the 1500m in Athens, but doubling up in the 5000m, something I never saw coming.

What happened to Thorpe?

Ian Thorpe retired in 2006 at age 24...too young if you ask me. Phelps is 23 and he's in his prime.

Thorpe was already on the world stage at age 14....maybe 10 years was enough.

Likely the final Olympics for baseball and softball. Synchronized swimming remains.

I know one of the dames in the female butterfly (??) event. At least I think that's which event she's in. Whatever, I went to high school with her and her sister dated two of my friends. So I'm naturally rooting for her in whatever event that is she's in.

Shame. I remember in the last olympics seeing Phelps and Thorpe go at it. Two genuine legends dueling it out. Shame that we won't see those two in action together again.

I'm looking forward to reading about how the television ratings keep getting worse and worse.

With the Summer Olympics I always watch the swimming, gymnastics and track and field competitions.
Elbow Deep In Chocolate Daily "Beauty is only a light switch away." - Chef Dale "And in the words of Albert Schweitzer...I fancy you." - Eddie Izzard "I haven't felt this devastated since Krakow was left standing with his bike, and Jordan Catalano pulled away with Angela." -- Janeane Garofalo
