They should really make MMA an Olympic sport.

But the Olympics always throw up the amazing. Like Hicham El Guerrouj not only winning the 1500m in Athens, but doubling up in the 5000m, something I never saw coming.

That 1500 final remains one of the greatest races i've ever watched. Just wow.
American (& kenyan-born) Bernard Lagat, who El Guerrouj beat in the final meters of that race, will be attempting to match the feat this year.

so yeah, it's all about the track and the marathon for me.
key races i'll be watching: men's 110 hurdles, women's 100 hurdles, men's 100m, women's high jump, every distance event (800, 1500, steeplechase, 5k, 10k, marathon), the relays (4x1; 4x4), the decathlon, the marathon. excitement.

Buddy & Julie Miller - Written in Chalk wow, first listen, but great great record! 9.3/10
Justin Townes Earle - Midnight at the Moviessurprisingly great, never picked up his past releases, but this one's knocking my socks off right away, 8.7/10
M. Ward - Hold Time 8.0/10
Neko Case -Middle Cyclone her best I've heard is my initial impression, but too soon to rate, haven't had a really good listen yet 7.8/10

With Zhang Yimou doing the opening ceremony, I hope to see lots of people flying around on wires.
Few beings have ever been so impregnated, pierced to the core, by the conviction of the absolute futility of human aspiration. The universe is nothing but a furtive arrangement of elementary particles. A figure in transition toward chaos. That is what will finally prevail. The human race will disappear. Other races in turn will appear and disappear. And human actions are as free and as stripped of meaning as the unfettered movements of the elementary particles. Good, evil, morality, sentiments? Pure ‘Victorian fictions.’ All that exists is egotism. Cold, intact, and radiant.

I usually watch track/field, soccer, and swimming. Swimming is probably my favorite. If they actually air it then field hockey, also.

I forgot I also love watching fencing.
An aesthetic heightened by Ralph Fiennes in Sunshine?

Oh my God, how cool is the pentathlon??
Every sport I love to watch in one.

Diving, gymnastics (none of that rhythmic horseshit) and track. Wish there were satellite feeds without the inane jingoism from network announcers.

Yes, as usual the people in the US that live near the Canadian border benefit from their coverage.

OK.

A few online bets to keep me interested.

Market Selection Odds Stake
Sailing Women / Keelboat - Yngling / Winner Great Britain 2.34 £4.00
Rowing Men / Fours / Winner Great Britain 3.00 £3.00
Medals Specials / Most Silver Russia 6.00 £4.00
Medals Specials / Most Bronze Any Other Nation (Not US China Rus) 12.00 £2.00
Tennis / Mens Tournament / Winner Andy Murray 12.50 £2.00
Boxing / Super Heavyweight / Winner David Price (GB) 11.00 £3.00
Modern Pentathlon Women / Winner Heather Fell 8.00 £4.00
Flatwater / K1 1000m / Winner Great Britain 3.60 £2.00
Boxing / Lightweight / Winner Frankie Gavin (GB) 3.15 £2.00
Athletics Women / 400m / Winner Christine Ohuruogu 11.50 £5.00
Individual Nations / Russia / Total Gold 31 + 4.00 £2.00
Individual Nations / China / Total Gold 31-40 2.02 £4.00
Individual Nations / United States / Total Gold 46 + 4.00 £2.00
Individual Nations / Great Britain / Total Gold 16 + 3.50 £10.00

I'm looking for Russia to pick up the most silver from the China US battle for most golds and hoping that Germany or even GB pick up a good 25 Bronzes to snatch that any other nation crown there.

Lopez Lomong named the US flag bearer, that's good to hear.
Brief history: He was born in sudan, kidnapped by rebels at age 6, escaped with some older boys some time later, ran for 2 days and ended up in a refugee camp in Kenya going to public schools.
At 16 wrote an essay that earned him a trip through the US government to be relocated to a foster family in Syracuse, NY (one of the "Lost Boys of Sudan"). Ended up going to school in Northern Arizona, and made the US 1500m team at this year's olympic trials shortly after officially becoming an american citizen. He also finished 5th in the 800, just missing the team in that event by inches at the finish line.
ESPN mag article (pre-olympic trials)

side note: all 3 american runners in the 1500 were born outside of the US.

I'll be interested in the results of the basketball, probably won't watch any of them though. The Ping-Pong is where it's at; but the media coverage is often nauseating , so I doubt I'll be too interested in these Olympics as a whole.
