But the Olympics always throw up the amazing. Like Hicham El Guerrouj not only winning the 1500m in Athens, but doubling up in the 5000m, something I never saw coming.
That 1500 final remains one of the greatest races i've ever watched. Just wow.
American (& kenyan-born) Bernard Lagat, who El Guerrouj beat in the final meters of that race, will be attempting to match the feat this year.
so yeah, it's all about the track and the marathon for me.
key races i'll be watching: men's 110 hurdles, women's 100 hurdles, men's 100m, women's high jump, every distance event (800, 1500, steeplechase, 5k, 10k, marathon), the relays (4x1; 4x4), the decathlon, the marathon. excitement.

Brief history: He was born in sudan, kidnapped by rebels at age 6, escaped with some older boys some time later, ran for 2 days and ended up in a refugee camp in Kenya going to public schools.
At 16 wrote an essay that earned him a trip through the US government to be relocated to a foster family in Syracuse, NY (one of the "Lost Boys of Sudan"). Ended up going to school in Northern Arizona, and made the US 1500m team at this year's olympic trials shortly after officially becoming an american citizen. He also finished 5th in the 800, just missing the team in that event by inches at the finish line.
ESPN mag article (pre-olympic trials)
side note: all 3 american runners in the 1500 were born outside of the US.
