i think enough americans have died this year for only 5% of the population to have even realized this happened
But among the jackals, the panthers, the bitch hounds, The apes, the scorpions, the vultures, the serpents, The yelping, howling, growling, crawling monsters, In the filthy menagerie of our vices, There is one more ugly, more wicked, more filthy! btw, how is boxing scored? there's obviously a person who comes out on top after each set of punches in many cases, but often it looks like they go blow for blow but only one person will get a point. does anybody know if there are specific things required to earn a point?

Speaking of, I don't understand AT ALL the new gymnastics scoring. Takes away all the drama because I have no clue how tough it'll be to beat a score of, say, 16.225. Much worse: How the hell could they take away the perfect 10.0? Sucks.

Activites that are judged rather than determined impartially by time or points are not really sports but artistic/athletic demonstrations. Gymnastics, boxing, wrestling, diving . . . The ever more complex point systems are just attempts to cover this up and give the impression of impartiality (and usually are a direct response to judging scandals). None of the summer sports are as bad as figure skating, though, where someone can fall down and still medal.

Glory Alozie (then of Nigeria) arrived in Sydney for the Olympics in 2000 to discover her fiancee had stepped out from behind a bus on a Sydney street to get hit and killed by a car. She then went out and won silver in the final of the women's 110m hurdles. Tragedies unfortunately happen at the Olympics. It's how those affected rebound that makes the Games what they are.

these usa gymnast women keep going out of bounds and those chinese gymnasts are definitely not 16, i have never seen a 16yr old look like they were 12.

Chinese relations, the situation with Russia/Georgia, and MLB. It was a pretty good interview, Costas grilled him on a lot of things.

Yeah it's almost funny the whole "oh yeah she's 16 sure." And even the 20 year old on their team doesn't look 20....no doubt because 20-4 = 16 and 4 years ago was the olympics when no doubt she was really younger then 16. They have some serious skills though no denying that. As far as the stabing goes....it's not being discussed because there's really nothing to discuss. We don't know anything about motives or anything like that. It could have simply been a mugging gone wrong.....which happens everyday all over the world...it's tragic and sad but it's not really something that needs to be dwelled upon by the public and the media. It's really not on the level of something like Munich not even close. Even if it was some wacko anti american nutjob it's not like he was representative of the people of China as a whole. On the contrary i've been really surprised with how warm of a reception our athletes have gotten on the whole.

in about 20 minutes or so, Christine Magnuson competes in the 100-meter butterfly. I went to high school with her. Two of my friends dated her sister. Yesterday she got teh second fastest time in the semifinals for the 100 meter 'fly. Needless to say, this is must-see tv for me.

every single one of these boxing matches (of which there are way too many) is complete domination. usa got pwnt 14-1 and the guy was just toying with the usa kid

Really wish U.S. had held on against the Dutch in soccer, they have to tie or beat Nigeria to advance, assuming the Netherlands beats japan. Also, are they televising any of the table tennis? I'd be interested to watch some of that over boxing or water polo.

water polo was pretty fun to watch for the first game... those guys are crazy treading water and sprinting while fighting, which adds value for the sheer impressiveness of the athletes boxing is really boring, i wish they didnt televise it

The water polo was interesting to watch for about five minutes, primarily because of how difficult and impressive the athletes are, but it was boring after that. It seemed like all the would do was swim, pass a few times and throw it, then swim to the other end. Rinse, Repeat.

Thanks to the DVR, I watched Olympics pretty much all day. The swimming stuff is addictive, synchronized diving got me hooked, beating China wasn't nearly as much fun as watching Lithuania hold off Argentina in basketball. Also, where has Handball been all my life? That sport is awesome!

Fantastic swim by Mangnuson - never would've expected her to get between our two swimmers.

Needless to say, I'm at work at the moment and quite a few of us were in the boardroom cheering on the two Aussie girls!

Well, the US soccer team has 4 points after two matches which is what I thought they'd end up w/. Good to see Babel getting a goal. The guy was great towards the end of the season last year & in the CL. Can't wait to get him back in a Liverpool shirt.

I'm glad this took place really early, I don't think I want people to see me when I'm yelling at the TV. "Where's your guys Liverpool, Real Madrid and Ajax now bitches? Sacha from Chivas USA just owned your ass!". I also told De Guzman to go back to Canada with Hargreaves about 20 times.
