I had me a good lil vacation from the SOMB so I thought I'd come back with everyone's least favorite kind of thread. Background info: I've always thought Tori Amos was no slouch, although I can't say I've ever gotten too deep into her catalog or worshiped over her like I have for say PJ Harvey or Bjork. However, I've listened to this song way more than I should probably admit to today: Friggin' brilliant. The piano parts are majestic. The mandolin intro beats the shit out of "Losing My Religion." The whistling part sounds straight out of Morricone. The percussion is way neat and atypical. Even the weird (and sometimes eyebrow-raisingly dumb) lyrics are great. Basically this is like >>>>> than The Hold Steady or whatever.

My favorite Tori song... never saw this video until a few minutes ago. Apparently it's just segments of other Tori videos .

A feminist friend of mine stopped being a fan of Tori after Strange Little Girls was released.

"I'm not gonna listen to her sing a bunch of misogynist songs."

Strange Little Girls was the first record since her debut that at all interested me. Typical of a (clueless) non-fan, I think it's her best. Does that make me a misogynist?

so wikipedia says this song was written in reaction to a story about female genital cutting. now i feel like kind of a dick for calling the lyrics dumb, but they're still not that great.

Good song, but very little of that first post is true.

I rarely get embarrassed by my past opinions on things, but I heard "Silent All These Years" on the radio the other day and I was definitely somewhat ashamed of how beautiful I used to think the song was. 'S OK, but "Winter" and "China" are way better, probably.

Come to think of it, time has not been kind to this woman in general.

Wonderful song. Boostorm, how did your 'feminist' friend completely miss the point of SLG? I like Tori more and more as I get older. It's adult music, very sophisticated. I ask for personality, and to put it simply, she's interesting. Her Piano box set is the most frequented of all the boxsets I own. And if you guys are looking to find hot girls, go to a Tori Amos concert. Shake the image of her 'fan' because I have never seen a collection of hotter, more beautifully dressed art girls. She's a magnet for this.

"Cornflake Girl" is f'n brilliant. Jawbox used to cover it. Not sure if they ever recorded it.
