http://dancetechnomu...s_cracks_top_40Well, it is used exceptionally well in the trailer, and it seems to be her most broadly appealing single so far. This makes sense. As her album Kala nears its first anniversary, M.I.A.’s gun-tottin’ single “Paper Planes” finally cracks the Billboard top 40. Plowing in at an impressive number 36 in its second week on the tally (the track debuted last week at a respectable number 55) the track looks top ten bound. The single has perched atop the iTunes dance music download chart for months.

Kind of impressive that this is making the top 40, as I can't imagine this tune getting much airplay on mainstream radio. I think the gunshots in the song would tend to freak out the average middle-aged program director. I've only heard it played on non-commercial stations in my area.
Do they play this tune on satellite radio?
It's actually getting played on Top 40, hip-hop and alternative stations, kinda surprised that it wasn't bigger when it came out because it has Gnarls Barkley like crossover appeal.

Top 40 stations are playing the regular album version or a remix?

I don't know if I can say it's all that surprising. There's always been a lot of hype behind M.I.A., it's just now beginning to see some commercial fruition.
"Paper Planes" is definitely catchy, so given the right exposure, it seems only natural that it would take off.
I think it's more surprising that "Galang" wasn't a bigger hit.

I don't know about that. It had all those electro squinks and whatnot, and I don't think people get into that as easily as they do a chill hip-hop beat and a Clash sample.

"Paper Planes" was pretty big at BC parties, which is unusual since most BC parties are playing top 40 pop/hip-hop, boy bands, and 70's classic rock power ballads. Aside from being catchy its probably the least grating you'll ever hear M.I.A.'s voice. "Galang" could never be a big hit because her singing would bother too many people. Plus the production is a little too out there for the mainstream.
Yeah, "Paper Planes" was a staple of Hampshire parties too.

this tune + pull up the people are the best MIA tracks.
Add "Sunshowers" in there, and you're spot-on.

Nah, my posts are awesome.
I think there's also a certain foreigness to the vocals of Galang that make it unpalatable to American audiences. I prefer it to Paper Planes but it's no surprise which is more popular here.
