Kings Of Leon
SOMBies Say:
"if this is 'butt-rock' then consider me an ass-man, cuz i'm all up in this shit lately. " - simakos
"Still happy enough with CCR, thanks." - Badger
"KoL is down-to-earth classic rock with a post-punk spin (especially on the new record). That's generally not pitchfork's thing." - Ella Isquire
"Youth and Young Manhood = pushing for the bigtime
A-ha Shake Heartbreak = raw riffage/ I told you so
Because of the Times = polished with a superior chamois
yeah, it's rambling, I'm drunk." - Stop Breathin'

The Hold Steady
SOMBies Say:
"'Party Pit'. The piano puts me in a trance. I love it." - jasmine
"Craig Finn sure is an unlikely performer. He has a variety of little nervous tics - putting his hand against his face or top of his head, spastic claps, and just generally acting like a goof. They delivered the rock though." - mouthbreather
"I haven't seen a band LOVE what they're doing quite like they do -- maybe since Guided By Voices. The stupid grins, the showmanship (the crazy tics), and the eagerness to please is refreshing." - lazylightning

X
SOMBies Say:
Um...It is pretty much impossible to find anything (even using google) for the term "X." They are a pretty good band, though.

"The World's A Mess, It's In My Kiss" is playing as we speak. Yep, album is winding down.
I started a thread two years ago devoted to the brilliance of Los Angeles. Still a fantastic record. Each song has at least one monster hook. And never less than that.

Damo Suzuki: So, um, yeah. Getting older isn't as bad as it sounds. Better than being young & poor (DjDrake) or young & slutty (SG) or young, poor and slutty (Paves); am I right?
Alright, my friends. It's time for another solid little rock jam

Jeff Buckley
SOMBies Say:
"He was a talented guy with a sense of classic romanticism in his music. Death enhanced that side of him. Saying Buckley's overrated is overrated. It's not like you see thousands of kids wearing Buckley t-shirts or him topping any "best of the '90s" lists." - UselessRocker
"I bought Grace in college because of some girl. She turned out to be a lesbian, but what hell, pretty good record anyway." - Duff.
"Every listen takes me right back to every time I ever saw him live and left on the verge of tears. (Or, okay, full-out crying. Shuttup. I'm an emo girl at heart.) That voice, my god." - gwa
"if you've never seen the Live in Chicago (from the Metro in '95) DVD, you owe it to yourself. if you're a casual fan and that doesn't give you chills, i don't know what to say. i've made more Jeff fans from recommending that DVD than anything." - solace

"Funny that Lydia Lunch and Exene Cervenka released a collaboration album, considering that they look more or less like the same person:"
- Pavement Ist Rad
Ha, that's only somewhat true, now that I think about it.
Can't imagine that Lydia has ever looked as all-out frumpy as Exene.
Then again, there are thousands of girls trying to pull this off these days:

Damo Suzuki: So, um, yeah. Getting older isn't as bad as it sounds. Better than being young & poor (DjDrake) or young & slutty (SG) or young, poor and slutty (Paves); am I right?

Bob Marley
SOMBies Say:
"most of my marley faves are not found on 'Legend.'" - championkid
"Here's one of my favorite videos of Marley performing on Old Gray Whistle Test complete with Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer still in the band.
And one of those killer bass lines Jimmy just mentioned.

Television
SOMBies Say:
"It sounded really fucking great. The second to last guitar solo in 'Torn Curtain' rules. And the guitar solo in 'Elevation' also rules. And the title track is just the most classic shit ever. Made me want to play guitar. And I did. And it ruled." - Pavement Ist Rad
"I bought this album back in 2001 after some kid told me the Strokes stole their sound. I was 15 and I didnt know shit about music aside from the classic rock i inherited from my parents and the 'new garage rock' scene that was sort of emerging at the time. Also, I had some punkish friends who were into Ska and Hardcore. So, I put this album on expecting some strokes-esque pop and I couldnt have been more confused. I remember I was pretty taken back at first, especially by Verlaine's voice and the clean, complex guitar work. I dug the title track, but my ears weren't really ready for the rest of the album. I just couldnt enjoy it, so I put it away for about 8 months. By the time I picked it up again I had become pretty bored with the whole 'GARAGE ROCK REVOLUTION 2001' thing, and I forced myself to listen. It was a challenge going from the Hives to Television (bizarre ass transition), but god damn, by the time I came around I was a changed man. My taste in music was forever altered. It was sort of a gate-way drug to all things good." - ShaunTheEdifice
"I made five people sit through the title track ['Marquee Moon'] in my first week of university, at the same time individually would have been funnier." - Mitchell

Most Bob Marley discs are currently resting between Dave Matthews Band and Jimmy Buffet discs.
Not really.

Joanna Newsom
SOMBies Say:
"I too like the way joanna can weave words around a simple thing such as, I am happy, or the trees look amazing with sun shining through them. what a good cd. jesus." - Cinnamon Pooter
"each song here is an endless elfin nightmare" - DrJimmy
"I'm not sure lifting sections from show tunes and plays, and combining them with the voice of Victoria Williams is a good thing." - Montana (November 26, 2006)
"Simply looking at the bands I like you will see originality combined with strong songwriting. Newsom is a perfect fit. Plus she's a nature freak. 'Ys' sounds even more amazing in the mountains." - Montana (July 31, 2008)

Sunny Day Real Estate
SOMBies Say:
"Sunny Day Real Estate were by no means the start of emo, but in a way they did help kick-start the second wave of emo that took off in the mid-90s. They stripped away a lot of the more 'punk' elements of the emo sound and emphasized the melody. I think they were probably one of the more 'beautiful' sounding emo bands, those first two albums are just absolute perfection." - AlkalineDrown
"I feel better knowing that I sold a copy of Sunny Day Real Estate's 'Thief Steal Me A Peach' 7" for $125 on eBay back in 1998, and a copy of the Sky Corvair CD (Braid & Joan of Arc) for $40 to some other sucker" - Very Metal

Fucking horrible. Just not very good songs. Very predictable and often cringe-worthy.
Ys at least has some semi-interesting melodies and sounds quite good.
I saw a picture of her in the Tribune today or yesterday and she looked awful, like she had suddenly aged 20 years. Maybe it was a bad angle.

Damo Suzuki: So, um, yeah. Getting older isn't as bad as it sounds. Better than being young & poor (DjDrake) or young & slutty (SG) or young, poor and slutty (Paves); am I right?

Kraftwerk
SOMBies Say:
"That thing looks so fucking cool. I want it for just, like, living room decor.
'Wow, what's that?'
'Oh... this old thing? It's the vocoder Kraftwerk used on Autobahn. THAT'S RIGHT MOTHERFUCKER.'" - Yancy
"I'd never heard someone use Synths like that; you heard Synths on albums by ELP, Yes, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, etc., but none of them got it like these Germans did. It was all synthesized, from the voice that spoke at the beginning of the track, to the rhythmic beats & pulses of the Drum Machine (A machine that played Drums! Brilliant!), to the sweeps & stabs of the minimalist melody. You could hear the rest of traffic passing & being passed, the type of roadway changing, the feel weather & scenery changing in the background, even someone attempting to tune in the radio as the station passes out of range. Definitely a Smack Up the Side of the Head musical moment in my life." - Freddie Freelance
