My excitement over BSS has cooled, but I think they're one of the bands that we shouldn't forget how good they are/were. They recently played a street festival out here and a friend of some friends who blogged about it and wrote that he didn't like BSS' set because he "got over Dave Matthews 8 years ago". I'm seriously thinking about just straight up punching him and yelling "You fucking idiot" at him next time I see him at a show. It's amazing how some people can completely miss the point of something and not get it.

Sort of along those lines, there is a comment in Stereogum's post about BSS at Lollapalooza 2006 where the guy says that someone standing by him was surprised they didn't sound like Barenaked Ladies. I guess because they're both Canadian or something.

Amazed Stars of the Lid are so high. Loved the last album though. Might be the wrong thread to ask, and I'm not even sure it matters-- but SOTL fans, where do I go next after the latest album? Tired Sounds?

Ha, he actually placed a long time ago.

I don't think Eric's Trip placed yet, though. ;)

If we are judging Funkadelic as a separate band than Parliament, does that mean Parliament placed higher, or didn't place at all? I love Funkadelic and all but fuck, Funkentelechy vs the Placebo Syndrome is easily the best album George Clinton was ever involved with.

Aside: the school i attend just decided to book Blues Traveler over George Clinton and P-Funk. George and all are way past their prime, but picking Blues Traveler as being the big show of the year? wtf?

"hello i hate your fucking guts fuck you i hate your fucking guts i hate your fucking guts i hate your fucking guts i hate this fucking machine i don't know how the fuck to use it i hate your fucking guts i'm gonna make my own fucking music"

That's a mistake. Saw P-Funk Allstars at Uchicago 3-4 years ago, and that was just fun as hell. George Clinton was so fucked up that when his sunglasses got stuck in his dreads, he didn't bother with the untangle- he just ripped out a few of those motherfuckers.

Oh yeah, and when they played Maggotbrain, it started raining. Prah.

The decision was made to split them. I saw more people voting for funkadelic, so that's what I voted for. I don't think parliament will place.

I prefer Funkadelic to Parliament - so they got more vote. Parliament may have been more fun than Funkadelic, but Funkadelic were far more exciting, and it's that excitement which sends me back to their albums more than Parliament's (which aren't bad at all).

Bright side for you: Ole Miss booked Tone Loc last year.

This year: Afroman.

That'll be an hour of drunk kids ignoring the guy onstage and then ten minutes of cheering whenever he goes, "Because I got high..."

great to see Stereolab, a classic and underrated band. They, even moreso than Tortoise or Beck or Mo Wax or Grand Royal or Saint Etienne, helped push 90s indie in so many directions at once and did quite a lot to define what from the past became "cool" and key texts to indie kids at the time and going forward, from the Beach Boys and Cali Pop to krautrock to Ennio and soundtracks to exotica and lounge to yé-yé and continental pop to tropicalia. Plus made great music of course, and even were political in a non-punchable way. They're one of those groups that suffer due to looking at the past through an LP-centric prism, because there have no go-to LPs that sum up their sound, or an album everyone agrees is their best and therefore makes all-time lists, so they get unfairly skipped over.

Stars Of The Lid

who??

http://en.wikipedia....tars_of_the_Lid
I just got into these guys recently. I call it "Sigur Ros without the singing, played at 16 RPM." An ambient artist with a sense of humor is a rare thing, with song titles like "December Hunting for Vegetarian Fuckface". :D

"Is everyone on here just an act sometimes?"--Hummingbird

Read all of my stupid song parodies here. Latest song improved/ruined: "Barbara Ann" by The Beach Boys.

Agreed. The Funkadelic albums were much more musically inventive to me - sure, not as fun to dance to - but they've also held up a bit better for me.

[But I guess, why split hairs? They're both effin' great]

Dots and Loops.

Great to seem them on the list, albeit outside the top 100. Not sure how overlooked they are as they've maintained a steady, substantial following for almost 20 years now. You can probably find their new album in most big-box stores.

I can't believe Stars of the Lid are this high. I like them and all, but...

i'd go with Refried Ectoplasm: Switched On Volume 2, myself, and i think we've summed up your statement that no one fully agreed on which album is their best.
