Sparklehorse, The Jayhawks and Gillian Welch all on the same page. Should be in the top 100, but this is SOMB, where super urban cliche dominates, and I accept that.

Jesus Died For Somebody's Sins But Not Mine

Patti Smith

She Don't Run
Through The Fields

#275.

Sparklehorse

Wow. Both waaaaay too low. What the hell is wrong with you people? Take it from an oldster, you need to make some adjustments in your life before it's too late. :( ;)

They probably haven't heard them.

Joe Strummer/Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros

No way one can find an anti-Strummer quote around here. Wonder how often that will occur around here as the list progresses.

I had an excellent one a couple weeks back.
Every Sunday morning I wake up
I see you by your dresser doing your make-up
Fluttering a Chinese fan in a Knoxville fashion
All last night you tossed and turned
Your body was hotter than the night Richmond burned
You say you had a bad nightmare about tractor trailers crashing
- The Felice Brothers

I don't know, I think Sparklehorse's ranking is pretty right on (and yes, Monty, I have heard them). Good band, but not top 100 material.

I'm inclined to agree. Sparklehorse has done some really spectacular stuff, but nonetheless, they didn't make my list.

They belong up with where Portishead will rank.

As for the Jayhawks, they are the best alt.country band of the 90's, and yes, better than Wilco at their peak. But alt.country is completely ignored on this forum due it it's urban nature.

The SNOOT in me feels like the phrasing on this statement makes it sound like you are talking about the urban nature of alt.country, not the "urban nature" of the forum.

Heh. That's completely what I thought, and didn't realize otherwise until I read this post.

I looked at it a couple times and said...doesn't he mean alt.country is RURAL. And then I just said FUCK IT, and hit control+w

Weird, I find this to be the only place anyone is talking about old man alt-country shit like the Jayhawks. Most of you guys are maddeningly stuck in 1970s Iowa.

Alt.country doesn't get played in Iowa, *metal* does. Also, you'd be surprised at how many fine pieces of ass listen to that band. But hey, enjoy your sausage-fest BO stank metal shows at some sex predators rural basement.

I don't want to get in the middle of this here, but I have yet to meet a Jayhawks fan who also happens to be an attractive woman. That's not a knock on the band, but it just doesn't scream 'hot chick demographic'

They're all listening to Lil Wayne and shit.

Maybe people have different taste in women. I think listening to Lil Wayne would make someone very unattractive

Obviously they don't have a huge fanbase, but they do seem to get their share of attractive women. Not only that but I've dated quite a few who loved the band after hearing them. The recent Olson/Louris shows, and the Olson-less Jayhawks shows really did draw more than your standard fare. I've started a few short relationships thanks to agressive hotties handing me their numbers at their shows. Something about liquor and the Jayhawks live relaxes the process. Good times.

Surprised Villalobos came in so (relatively) high. That's awesome. Obviously, he should be way higher, but that's what you get with the rural nature of this forum.

I couldn't let Artem have the last word when he was here and that’s not going to change in his absence....

"..I hate it when a nice track is over. I'm addicted to music and what music is giving me, emotionally, without thinking about it, acting on different levels of the brain. And when this is stopping, I’m frustrated, you know? In club music, the surprising moments are very important, but to have the surprising moments you need a certain time of tension. You can’t deliver one surprising moment after another because then it’s boring. So to find context for the surprising moment, you have to find a frame for it. And this frame has to be big. This forces the music not to be like orgasm after the other, really compressed and concentrated: everything is a little bit stretched to be mixed with other stretched music - R.V”

Music has the amazing, if not unique, ability to distort our perception of time and I’ve always bought into RV's understanding of that fact and his ability to play with it and manipulate it.
