Music by Brian, lyrics done by Scott Bennett and Van Dyke Parks. It obviously doesn't hold a candle to the Smile redo but it's easily his best actual solo album although that's not saying much because the competition there isn't too fierce. For an album created by a crazy 66 year old with a coke ravaged voice I'd say it's surprisingly solid.

The final third of the album is definitely the best batch of original material he's written in about 30 years. Everything from "Oxygen to the Brain" to the end is fantastic.

Thanks for the link...i'm surprised this hasn't leaked by now. This is easily lightyears better then his other non SMiLE solo releases. Using his excellent touring band in the studio is a really good idea. It's amazing how he's been able to to make his voice better over the last few year, it's still all screwed up but it definitly sounds better now then back in 04.

got to meet the legend today at Amoeba. i was so excited to finally be face to face with the guy that inspired me to become a record producer. as he signed my copy of That Lucky Old Sun i couldn't help but feel sorry for him. he looked like he was ready to have a breakdown; being surrounded by a store full of strangers. time has not been good to him. getting to see him in person, i consider myself very lucky.

Pet Sounds recently in the past two or three weeks has become the only thing I listen to. Pretty much the only reason i even wake up is to go to class and then spend my free time listening to that album over and over.

you should really listen to Pet Sounds Sessions. it will keep you locked up in a room for a month.

Thanks. Seeing him perform 'Going Home' on Leno the other night, really tempted me to get this. Anyway, the album is an extremely fun listen on the first time around...

No, I was talking about suicide.

Thanks for the link. I just purchased Smiley Smile / Wild Honey and I must say that it's another masterpiece. Word on the street is "Lucky Sun" isn't so great but I don't believe a word of it.

Don't believe a word of it, unless it's from some of the major publications-

MOJO- ****
Uncut- ****
Rolling Stone- ****
Spin- ****
SOMB- (crickets)

How is this getting so overlooked. It's really wonderful...can't see how anyone who loved Smile wouldn't love this.

"Live Let Live" is classic Van Dykes Parks writing with huge swirling string hooks.
"Midnight's Another Day" is the new "In My Room"- yes- that good.
"Southern California" is nostalgia at it's most poignant.

Just an amazing record from anyone much less someone who's in his 60's and admittedly mentally disturbed.

I really tried. Gave it a few good listens. I worshiped practically everything he did at one time, but I'm not hearing anything worth repeating here.

What don't you like about it? The only real fault I have is that the spoken word narrations are a tad hokey- it's a shame if these turn people off enough to miss this great companion to Smile.

I enjoyed the album. I've given it a good share of listens, but that's about it. It's nothing spectacular, but fun enough to keep around and listen to every once in a while.

I hear ya man this album is great, the lack of attention it's getting is criminal. Sure it doesn't approach Pet Sounds / SMiLE level but really nothing does. This is a very solid record easily in the mid to upper tier of his body of work. The spoken word sections are the only thing that I'm not in love with on this album....they just sound too forced and hokey. He should have consulted Shatner on how to do senior citizen spoken word the right way.
