Brrr! It's cold in here.
There must be throughsilver in the atmosphere!

My local old movie channel recently added this and I watched about half of it the other day and the first thing I thought of was "Isn't this one of Throughsilver's favourite films?"

I was about to ask what the eff was wrong with you, until I realised I watched a quarter of it the other night.

Also: forgot Old Boy!!!!!!!!!!

I'll have it somewhere in the 5-7 area. I knew I was missing something big.

[edit] Hey remember when my screen name was Sparky Polastri? Good times.

No, but I do remember when you first switched it to Capt. Midnight and had no idea it was you for some 3-4 months

Nice list of 10, Mitch. ;)
You're leaving nothing left for your grand decade poll next year, my man.

Even leaving out 1999, so tough to narrow this down- lot of bold and beautiful filmmaking (Amorres Perros, Jesse James, Diving Bell, Amelie, Gladiator, Kill Bill 2, Dogville, Once) would make my list of 100...but the top 10 is reserved for films from different genres that affect me on various emotional levels primarily through great scripts (except #9 which was just a frigging mad wild ride).

The Objective
Napoleon Dynamite
Cloverfield
The Blair Witch Project
Grizzly Man
Into The Wild
30 Days Of Night
Live Free Or Die
Apocalypto
Zodiac
SAW

Sure I am forgetting a few.

One of my favourite lists, because it's just so Montana. You've got nature-heavy flicks, action flicks, horror flicks, and...Napoleon Dynamite which is the requisite Montana-likes-that? pick (Like, say, Fiery Furnaces) where just as you have him figured out he throws a curveball at you. Also, I'm not knocking Napoleon Dynamite at all because it's probably in my Top 10 most watched of the period.

FWIW, the "Live Free Or Die" choice is not Die Hard. It's this film from 2006:

Every Sunday morning I wake up
I see you by your dresser doing your make-up
Fluttering a Chinese fan in a Knoxville fashion
All last night you tossed and turned
Your body was hotter than the night Richmond burned
You say you had a bad nightmare about tractor trailers crashing
- The Felice Brothers

I forgot that movie even existed, and I love Paul Schneider, so why haven't I seen it yet?

I was really entertained by those movies. That's the experience I like. I used to be all about "the drama" and writing a dissertation at the end, but now I just want some fucking popcorn and to feel like I'm going on an adventure rather than some douche trying to talk me through his latest painting.

I'm curious as to why you'd have this attitude towards the medium of film, but have an entirely different attitude about music. I'm not criticizing, it just strikes me as odd. If you had this attitude towards music, you'd be touting the greatness of Jay Reatard and Hot Chip because they were "entertaining". Knowing your serious take on music, these sorts of artists repulse you because you have no interest in being simply "entertained" (i don't like them either :P ). Your attitude/standards towards film is entirely different and I'm just wondering why.

Picking Reatard and Hot Chip would be like having late period Adam Sandler movies on my list.

There's a difference between sucking ass and being entertaining.

I loved Death Proof, but I have recency barriers to my list that are only transcended by stuff like No Country For Old Men.

Agreed.
Few beings have ever been so impregnated, pierced to the core, by the conviction of the absolute futility of human aspiration. The universe is nothing but a furtive arrangement of elementary particles. A figure in transition toward chaos. That is what will finally prevail. The human race will disappear. Other races in turn will appear and disappear. And human actions are as free and as stripped of meaning as the unfettered movements of the elementary particles. Good, evil, morality, sentiments? Pure ‘Victorian fictions.’ All that exists is egotism. Cold, intact, and radiant.

If there is a movie more pretentious and pointless than I Heart Huckabees, I don't wanna know it's probaly on a list of my favorites somewhere.

I think "pretentious and pointless" is Huckabees' entire purpose.

I guess there's dumber reasons to make a movie - Anna Nichole Smith made a couple, so there must be - but yeesh, what a waste. Shame, too: David O. Russell is a good writer.

in terms of style. Tarentino does a better job with over the top. Deathproof was a canned copy of a drive-in flick from hell. Deathproof only gets interesting when somebody dies. . Hardly better writing. His nonsense bartender cameo reminds me of too many washed up no necks who squandered their lives away. As 'hip' as it tries to be-it sucked and it fails to deliver.
Give me Uma's revenge any day of the week.

I love Death Proof and the whole of Grindhouse was one of the best times I ever had in a theater. That said though it's really too new for me to consider and in the end I have a real soft spot for kung-fu and martial arts flicks in general so i'd still likely rank kill bill higher.

for someone who gets 'intellectual' about flicks. you certainly have a funny way of dismissing a film that's about thinking differently.
