These guys co-starring in a new film sparked this conversation; hey, I'm still having a hard time deciding. Both fine American actors, both have had their share of turds, especially on the "back nine" of their respective careers. They have both played similar roles; and yet, they are pretty different actors. I like 'em both, but I had to give the slight edge to lil' Al, cuz of Michael Corleone.

Pacino. Although he seems to be working hard to catch up, his body of work doesn't contain quite as many "WHAT were you thinking" moments as DeNiro's does.

Does DeNiro really have anything more "what the fuck are you doing" than either of those?

I think DeNiro probably wins as far as great movies he has been in, but Pacino has Glengarry and the Godfathers.. They're fairly even. I don't even know.

Never seen the latter, which I always think of as the movie that killed Annie Lennox's acting aspirations, or the former, which, though reviled upon release has come under favorable critical review with the passage of time. Not good, eh?

THIS would be my pick for a great "WHAT the-?" moment:

Cruising has gotten recent critical praise? Jesus, I hope whichever critics gave that movie a positive review got fired immediately.

DeNiro all the way. I can hardly take Pacino's overacting anymore. DeNiro's overacting is somehow more endearing.

Pacino's overacting was clearly evident in "Two For The Money."

De Niro. He has the best performances of the two (Raging Bull, Taxi Driver) and a greater number of really good performances. As well, the most recent great performance between the two belongs to De Niro, as Louis in Jackie Brown. Plus there's more variation in his work. Al Pacino, who I've really liked in films as recent as Any Given Sunday, The Insider (is ten years ago recent anymore?), and Merchant of Venice, tends to play a variation of the same character he's been playing since the early Nineties. He plays it well, but it's a bit repetitive.

Neither has been living up to their reputations in recent years. Way too much blockbuster Hollywood bullshit.
