so my machine has been acting weird ever since that russian porn pop up stuff... anyway, just now like 10 minutes ago, i was unzipping a Love Is All .rar that Bobzilla linked to and i got the blue screen asking about BIOS updates and video cards and such...wtf? now, i was able to manually shut down my machine and start it back up and all i can see is my desktop wallpaper, no icons and start tab. i pulled up task manager by ctrl+alt+delete and when i type "run explorer.exe" i get another error message saying "This application has failed to start because Normaliz.dli was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this" i am able to pull up other programs through the task manager, but can't get explorer to work. please help me?

In the end, even your computer couldn't handle all that bad indie. I suggest installing Back In Black.

If it's a virus it's best to deal with it as soon as possible. You may want to take it in for repair. It won't be cheap.

I'd help you Simakos but I don't think you will listen.

curious if it was a real blue screen. My son got one recently that had a fake blue screen as a screen saver. I suggest downloading AVG Free ASAP and running it on the system. The should get you to a certain level. if you still have problems, I'll look up the spyware program I used after that.

Simakos I thought you had a Mac? A pal recently lost all his desktop icons--he had to re-code his registry through the console and replace the corrupted one with that. He got detailed instructions from the Googles.

i have a Macbook Pro and it is fine.

this problem is on my home PC.

i found a few things on google but i'm afraid to pul the trigger on one of the found "solutions" and i all i really want to do is avoid re-formatting.

is this what happens when you run out of hard disk space? i know i am dangerouslt close to my max on the hard drive.

This may help.

A word of caution on AVG. Generally speaking it's a fine program, but they are currently dealing with a major issue.

the msdn page i linked to above describes running system restore without explorer:

"hi i had the same problem go to windows task manager by pressing cltr then alt and then delete press new task and coy and paste this %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe and press k then restore ur comp and then it will totally fine"

if you were lucky enough to have explorer running, you run it from all programs, accessories, system tools

System restore is waaaay jumping the gun on this. There are many other options to try before that.
