I certainly listen to more ambient and metal than I did before. In terms of artists, I’ve delved deeper into the Melvins and Ween. I’m not sure that I would have stumbled across Drudkh or Shit&Shine without this board. For that, I am truly grateful.

SOMB introduced me to -- Super Furry Animals M83 Junior Senior Sunn)))) Mucca Pazza Steve Earle (Jess) the lesser-known hits of Chuck Berry (Norton) Garrett Kriston ;) Electric Six (not a big fan, but good for shitzngiggles) MGMT (Mitchell, I think it was...still working on giving them a full listen, but I'm getting intrigued...) Probably more that I'm missing...

Even if I limit this to bands that have become favorite artists, it's a pretty long list, including Opeth Kyuss Electric Wizard Melvins Celtic Frost Dillinger Escape Plan The Sword High on Fire Mammatus Burning Witch Enslaved Alcest Coffins Lair of the Minotaur Primordial Agalloch LCD Soundsystem Hot Chip The Flaming Lips Dio-era Black Sabbath Drive-by Truckers I could probably go on. If it weren't for Sask & Burzum, among other people around here, I'd have spent a lot less of the last few years listening to great music.

Oh, Complain, you live up to your name. Credit you for upping his discography for me, much kowtows and kudos deserved...<virtual bows to Groucho avatar>

But I knew of him way before SOMB--I liked his stuff only on the strength of accidentally hearing TWO SONGS, but had no idea where in the hell I could find it.

The Kinks ~ thanks to El Corazon AC/DC ~ thanks to Mouthbreather i can't remember if anyone specifically got me into Guided By Voices/Robert Pollard, but i know Sid and Mouth helped out a lot in that department although i liked Neil Young, i didn't really KNOW Neil Young until Campaigner's awesome thread. i'm sure i'm missing something...

Pretty much.

Unlike all the old people here, I never really got the chance to find out about up and coming indie rock combos without Simakos checking Stereogum first or getting Burzum to sift through all the countless doom metal releases that come out every year so that I can hear only the very best ones.

slightly insulting... i don't really read Stereogum on a regular basis.

my biggest SOMB recomendation in the last few years has been Modern Lovers, Reatard, and Television.
Disappears/The Lanterns 2.19 Hideout
Handsome Furs / D*R*I 3.15 Empty Bottle ?
Red Red Meat 3.18 Empty Bottle
Gaslight Anthem 4.3 Bottom Lounge ?
Glasvegas 4.6 Bottom Lounge

Yeah, I rarely read any online zines and even my coffee table mags like RS, Spin, Paste, Blender aren't scrutinized as they were in my past. Too busy with real life going on. Thus the SOMB is a portal of sorts, pointing me toward things. Pretty much doing the time intensive work for me. That and tuning into the few good stations in the world. As a kid it was all about the radio and the magazines. Then, up until 2000 or so it was mostly just the magazines since radio had gone down the crapper. There was the net to tune into some radio as well. So, yeah, the SOMB has turned me on to countless new artists.

Villalobos and Pablo Casals. Casals had a snowball effect on me where now I'm buying Classical records quite often.

Yesterday I was just thinking about how back in 2004 (2005?) everyone on the Internet was obsessed with Gang of Four and how nobody even mentions them today. I still have a CD of Entertainment! on my shelf that I probably haven't played since I moved in here.

I doubt I would have purchased it if I wasn't spending so much time here back then.

Disco Inferno is probably the best reply to this. I play "The 5 EPs" on my computer a lot more than the two official albums of theirs that I actually own on CD.
