How insanely hard is it to pick between "Sympathy", "Gimme Shelter", "Brown Sugar" and "Rocks Off"? It's nearly inconceivable that they were subsequent releases.

Paint It Black and You Can't Always Get... A very difficult decision. Almost went with Waiting On A Friend as a closer. Almost went with Gimme as an opener. Paves understatement "pretty good band"...funny.

I'd go with these as well. The intro of Gimme Shelter is one of the greatest ever.

Opener: "She Said Yeah" Closer: "Shattered" "She Said Yeah" , a cover song that opens side two of "December's Children" (usa), rocks just as hard as "Rocks Off", and they rarely (if ever) play it anymore. "Shattered" was never my favorite Stones song (I almost inserted it in the recent "non-country steel guitar" thread cuz Ron Wood plays a very discreet{i.e., way down in the mix} steel guitar on the third verse that sounds less like he's actually playing and more like he set a drink down on the pedal steel and they recorded it by mistake), but it is an homage of autobiographical decadence; somehow the music sounds just as depraved/fucked out as the lyric ( a little too Manhatten-gushy, but then, I reckon Studio 54 had that great George Jung blowski from the late 70's), and, like the rest of "Some Girls", the drumming is outstanding, even for Charlie Watts, who is always outstanding. The juxtaposition of these two songs is like the story of the Stones: We began as these scruffy London students in love with American r&b, and ended up as these guys whose faces look like topographical maps of Mars.

I would add that the Stones' only rival is Motown in regard to the creative, tasteful, song-supportive use of percussion instruments, and here is a damn good example.

An awesome build in that intro, almost like "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" without the strings. This was my Opener choice, too.

YCAGWYW should be an opener (wow, I had no idea!), so that was my Close choice.
