I stole this thread idea from a different music forum. Bill Laswell - Ambient Translations of Bob Marley in Dub Ozomatli - Ozomatli Fishbone - The Reality of My Surroundings Curtis Mayfield - Live! Morphine - The Night I don't know if anyone can look at this and get any sense of the music I like. I tried to have these represent lots of things. I didn't include albums I really love, like Axis: Bold as Love or Jailbreak (Cause I generally don't like most 70's classic rock like that), Making Movies or Marquee Moon (Guitar Rock) or Grace (mopey art-rock like Radiohead), even though I might like those albums more than these.

looking back, I'm not sure if I necessarily like any of those albums more than the ones listed, but I think it's possible I like Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and Yoshimi more, but I don't think they really represent anything else that I like. Except that YHF could represent all of the wilco things I like (Mermaid Avenue, Loose Fur). Not sure what is like Yoshimi, but I probably don't like it.

Uh. I don't think this is going to be really anything other than me listing my 5 favorite records.

Here's the best I could do: The Band - The Last Waltz Talking Heads - Fear of Music Portishead - Dummy Modest Mouse - The Moon & Antarctica Grizzly Bear - Yellow House Not necessarily my favorite albums, but I could probably connect most albums I love to at least one of these albums.

Damo Suzuki: So, um, yeah. Getting older isn't as bad as it sounds. Better than being young & poor (DjDrake) or young & slutty (SG) or young, poor and slutty (Paves); am I right?

Alright, my friends. It's time for another solid little rock jam

The Weakerthans - Left and Leaving
Phil Collins - Hello, I Must Be Going
Kylie Minogue - Fever
The Descendents - Milo Goes to College
Godspeed You Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven

I think this covers it quite well, though, two pop albums might be a tad too much.

The Hold Steady - Separation Sunday I like rock ballads, but I sort of aspire to be a drunken poet. Animal Collective - Feels I like things that are beautiful and slightly strange. Aesop Rock - Labor Days Hip hop is rad, but I love when it is smart as well. Silver Jews - The Natural Bridge I am a depressed fuck, but I enjoy searching for beauty in the depression. Antonio Carlos Jobim - Wave Saturday afternoon cocktail hour at a sunny beach side resort type joint, and some girl is sort of looking at me from across the way, and I casually stroll up and spark up a conversation with her. This is what I need playing in the background. Maximum smoothitude.

I always do these kinds of lists, and i always hate them. I just listed 5 records I like a hell of a lot and yet managed to leave out Bowie, Dylan, T. Rex, Ramones, Hawkwind, Television... jeebus, look at me freak out like there's a wrong answer.

Neurosis - Through Silver in Blood - brutality. Experimentation. Heavy metal in weird shapes.
Blink 182 - Enema of the State - I like punk rock and pop music. In the interest of economy, I pick this fine example of their mix.
Brahms - Ein Deutches Requiem - Epic, symphonic, beautiful.
Rick James - Street Songs - I like the funk, I like the show, and I like the camp.
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing... - Beats, samples and ambition.

The Byrds - Notorious Byrd Brothers (west coast psychedelia with a rural folky touch.. very much my type) Grails - Black Tar Prophecies Vol 1,2,3 (these span a great range of influences - from post rock to kraut to mongolian folk music to psych to drone.. lovely) Neil Young - On The Beach (chill and dopey) Isaac Hayes - Shaft OST (it was either this or Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto for top chill album)

Girl Group Sounds Lost and Found John Prine - John Prine Akron/Family - Love is Simple Ramones - Ramones The Band - The Band Interesting exercise. Only 2 of these would really be considered for a "Favorite records top 5".
