SOMB 2008 Miscellaneous Polls - Voting Thread
#1
Posted 29 November 2008 - 03:35 PM
The results will most likely be posted on one of the days following Christmas before we get to the album poll.
-New this year! All votes for the Miscellaneous Polls can be posted in this thread or PMed to me by December 20th. The more votes we have, the harder it is to predict the results (and at the same time, I don't think anyone cares enough to actually spoil this for themselves).
-You can vote for up to 10 choices in each category. If there are certain categories that you don't want to vote in, don't let that stop you from submitting picks in the other ones.
Here are the categories we're voting in:
-Best Album Tracks
-Best Album Openers
-Best Album Closers
-Artists of the Year
-Videos of the Year
-Best Music-Related Movies
-Best Music-Related Books
-Best Live Acts
-Biggest Letdowns (this is a category about albums)
-Best Music-Related TV Performance
-Best Music-Related Pop Culture Moments
-Best Album Cover
-Best Record Label
-Best SOMB Mixes (mixes made by SOMBies, of any variety, in the year 2008. Must have been posted and fished on the board at some point to be eligible)
-Biggest WTF Song (to clarify, this is not the worst single poll, that is further down. This is a category for the songs that make you scratch your head and say "WTF?" These often can be good songs as well, just keep in mind that it is supposed to be insane songs that often make no sense)
-Worst Single of 2008 (this is the place for songs that are exclusively horrible)
-Best New Artist of 2008
-Best Cover Song (only requirement is that the cover needs to be something not too hard to find as an official release, youtube clip, or bootleg audio file, hopefully this will stay as covers introduced by artists in 2008 and not things that bands have already been doing for years)
And our new category for 2008
-Worst Album Cover
Hopefully allowing votes to be posted in this thread will keep it visible in the upcoming weeks, as well as inspire people to get creative with their choices.

Another Spin for Vinyl
By ALEX WILLIAMS
Published: August 29, 2008
DURING his freshman year at Point Park University in Pittsburgh a couple years ago, James Acklin, now 20, felt lost among the social cliques on his new campus until he got to talking with a student who was in some of his classes. She seemed unusual, and it wasn’t just her look: thick-framed eyeglasses, bangs and vintage dresses. Then, one rainy day in February, the two skipped class and went to her apartment. As soon as she opened her door his instincts were confirmed: she had a turntable. So did he. They both spoke the language of vinyl.
Their bond was sealed as soon as she placed the stylus on an LP by the band Broken Social Scene, he said in an e-mail message. "There was this immediate mutual acknowledgment, like we both totally understood what we define ourselves by," continued Mr. Acklin, who considers his turntable, a Technics model from the 1980s that belonged to an aunt, a prized possession. "It takes a special kind of person to appreciate pops and clicks and imperfections in their music."

To each his own. I think the main reason I dislike most of these songs is because they were on the radio in the kitchen I worked at all the time. Hearing the same song 5 or 6 times during a 4 or 5 hour shift can get pretty annoying.

POST OF THE YEAR
SOMB Says: They were wrong, completely wrong, about everything really, and they kinda sucked, and were ugly, and no one really liked them, not here anyway, never even heard of em, only the weirdoes, because every song–every song—sounded exactly the same, just a different order of the three or four chords they could be bothered to learn, and Joey couldn't sing, could barely speak, sounded as goofy as he looked, at eight feet tall, 67 pounds, and god that mug, and the leather jacket and the jeans, just like his brothers, and they weren't even brothers for fucksakes, and their guitarist was a fucking Republican, Johnny, god rest his soul, and they couldn't even live to old age, Joey Johnny Deedee, gone before nearly every goddamn Rolling Stone, though maybe that helps, but it's just another thing, and they trotted this out, actually in front of people, called it rocknroll, actually didn't bother calling it anything, didn't give a fuck what anyone called it, what they said, just went out there, at a country western bar, or was it a homeless shelter, but they kicked out the jams, barely taking a second to breath between songs, arguing onstage, no set list, just a bunch of simple pop tunes, sped the fuck up, Tommy or Marky or whoever pounding the drums, who could keep up, really, and Johnny and Deedee attacking their instruments, Joey bleeting about huffing, and horror movies, and beating up children, like a smartass, and it came together, but it was chaos, and it was mayhem, and it was rocknroll, because it lived, it burned, it couldn't be stopped, and no one listened, only the weirdoes, but they got it, were right, were right all along. – Duff
Just thought I'd throw that out there.
