and The Beatles are the Beatles of art rock.

No.

History of Art Rock - BBC:

PF was playing free form experimental art rock in 66' and the Beatles were going to see them.

are you saying Pink Floyd was more an influence on the Beatles and not the other way around? if it wasnt for the Beatles bringing Psych rock to the main stream, Pink Floyd would have never left the underground.

Beatles. Mainly because of the quality of the 60' albums were mindblowing and the melodies are God-like. The Beatles were the best pop/rock band in history.

That said, it was established very early on that Pink Floyd was the "alternative" to the Beatles as this media report from 66 conveys:

Guitar legend Dave Gilmour has hinted that there would be no Pink Floyd if it wasn’t for The Beatles.

The 61-year-old was speaking shortly after the release of his live DVD ‘Remember That Night - Live At The Royal Albert Hall’ when he admitted that he learnt how to play from listening to the Fab Four.

He told reporters: "I borrowed my first guitar of a neighbour and never gave it back. I've still got it actually.

"I was an enormous fan of the Beatles. I copied everything they did before I started creating my own stuff. I’d like to have been in the Beatles. They did well.”

Uh... Pink Floyd brought it to the mainstream with their free form performances in the London Underground and singles like See Emily Play and Arnold Layne which were released before Sgt. Peppers.

Pink Floyd’s hallucinatory presentation of lights and music at London’s Roundhouse in 1966 brought psychedelia to the U.K. scene. The group carried rock and roll into a dimension that was more cerebral and conceptual than what preceded it. What George Orwell and Ray Bradbury were to literature, Pink Floyd is to popular music, forging an unsettling but provocative combination of science fiction and social commentary. In their early years, with vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Syd Barrett at the helm, Pink Floyd were the psychedelic Pied Pipers of the “London underground” scene. In the Seventies, with bassist Roger Waters providing more of the songwriting and direction, Pink Floyd became one of the most influential rock bands of all time.

Gilmour wasn't in Pink Floyd until 68, goof. ;) By then psychedelia had already been established.

what was bigger in the mainstream? Tomorrow Never Knows, or See Emily Play?

its also worth mentioning that Tomorrow Never Knows pre dates See Emily Play by over a year.

TNK was more of a straight up rock track with a very light coating that sounded like a rock band trying on a west coast psych jacket that didn't quite fit at the time.

See Emily Play sounds like it was born that way, and it reached #6 on the UK charts.

Amazing song but I wouldn't call it psychedelic by any measure.

Here's what PF was doing at the time. You can see Lennon in the crowd:

Rain is a psychedelic song. it might not be as free form and structureless as Pink Floyds underground noodleings, but its psychedelic none the less. either way, don't compare Floyd to the Beatles.

Comparisons can defintiely be made during the psych era. Floyd was the better psych band.

That's because they were a psych band, albeit one that dabbled in pop songwriting forms.

The Beatles were pop craftsmen first and foremost. Psychedelia was simply a stop on their journey.

Damo Suzuki: So, um, yeah. Getting older isn't as bad as it sounds. Better than being young & poor (DjDrake) or young & slutty (SG) or young, poor and slutty (Paves); am I right?

Alright, my friends. It's time for another solid little rock jam

Because I think they're dull and ridiculous (and beaten into the ground at this point).
