You said some goofy things in your Rat thread, though I thought they were kind of funny. And then you were all "I'm making a mix for my mom, what songs does she already like?" Try a couple sincere posts that show real engagement with what other posters are saying.

That said, thanks for the Andrew Bird link. I'll probably check this one out as well - "There Are Maybe Ten or Twelve" is an excellent song, even if Carl is my least favorite pornographer.

On first listen this is certainly... I don't want to say underwhelming, because that sounds negative... this is a kind of cozy, familiar disc. I need to absorb it more before judging but there's no reason to see this as anything other than another great disc of excellent Newman melodies. It doesn't seem as varied as Slow Wonder, unfortunately, and the production lacks the insularity that made Slow Wonder SOUND like a solo project in the first place; the production here is kind of fuzzy, open, airy, and with all the backing vocals (I know Slow Wonder had SOME backing vocals, but still), it sounds like NP-lite.

I've listened around 7 times now and it hasn't grown as much as I thought it would. It hasn't worn thin either though, and thankfully it's an immediately likeable album.

i agree... Slow Wonder is the best record he has ever made.

Yeah, I'm excited to hear this. I don't really like NP (even though I own them all for some reason, just don't listen to them), but Slow Wonder was a constant listen for me for about 6 months.

Not sure. I guess I buy into the hype and want to like them, and hold out hope every time, but it never happens. I love what I've heard of the first 5 tracks so far. I wish this guy would stay on his own. NP to me sounds like too many moving parts and individual songwriters unable to write a coherent album. It barely worked for The Grays for one album, and really, the way I listen to that album is by artist - if I'm on a Falkner kick, I listen to just his songs, or Brion just his. As a whole, it's a bit of a mess. That's how the NP albums sound/feel to me. They even ruin most of the Newman songs - but by himself, he strikes a perfect balance. Probably because there's less of the others' contributions getting in the way. It's like a bunch of superfluous noise and added voices/sounds for no good reason.

exactly how i feel... i wish he was just solo as well. i keep buying their records and seeing them live with friends and remain underwhelmed mostly. it's all too much for me. his first solo record was nice and restrained. haven't spun this one yet... and dare i say it, i don't like the sound of Neko Case's voice. i know, shocking stuff, but she kind of bugs the hell out of me.

I was afraid to mention her by name around here, but since you did...I agree. I also don't like the other guy's songs. NP is basically Newman with too many distractions and shoved too far into the background by lesser artists to be tolerable for an entire album. If you like Slow Wonder, I think you'll be happy with this one. I'm not sure it's consistently as catchy as SW (at least after one listen), but it's good.
